You had to look up at the man, and you noted how his sparkling blue eyes were crinkled in a smile. They caught the light well from this angle, for he was standing in a sunny spot under the shadows of the overhead treetops that dappled the ground. His open arms fell to his sides, and his hands folded into his pockets, his grin became more of a sideways smile, mischievous. Planning. "Why don't you come along with me?" A pause, and a gruff addition: "Got something I wanna show ya."
"You know I don't like surprises."
"You'll like this one."

There was a grunt of surprise and a thud as John was suddenly pushed backward. He hit the grass beneath him hard, and, for a moment, struggled on the pure survival instinct of a wild animal. His thoughts, sharpened by his quickened heart, told him twenty ways to kill the man who'd pinned him down before he remembered who it was.
"Not without a fight, Marston!" Arthur laughed again, a sound that rocked his chest and brought John back to his senses."

Maybe that’s why John hangs around him so often. Maybe he wants in on those jobs, so he waits by the campfire to see if Javier brings them up in conversation. Maybe he settles on just listening to the man play his music and sing. Maybe he thinks the way he ties his neckerchief looks pretty smart, and finds his mustache somehow endearing.

For a man so put together, tightly sewn at the seams regardless of how jaggedly those seams are cut, it is deeply satisfactory to get Javier to tremble without lifting a single finger. Merely your presence can do it, even, the sight of you naked enough to make him blush as though he's never seen another nude before, in art or life. His fingers had shook fixing the harness to your hips, resisting temptation.

Summary
The most wonderful thing about the town of Winterwood is the lack of law enforcement. And teachers. And just generally only a quarter of the parental figures remaining (were they wiped out of something? The rest of them are criminals!).
Due to this, is turns out that morally questionable ways of gaining information are all the rage, at least to one curious soul.Join the professor as they interview residents of the town, listening to their exciting and sometimes gory stories about the sinister happenings and odd goings on that take place. Ranging from radiobiology scandals to vampire transformations, something is magic where it shouldn't be, and it's up to them- and us - to piece the information together and figure out:
"Just what is wrong with Winterwood?"
because nobody else will. They're all too busy bottling up their trauma.
