This fic made me laugh not even 30 seconds in, so I wasn't quite prepared for all the different kinds of emotions this would put me through. I can't remember the last time a fic has moved me as much as this one did. I laughed a lot, but I was sad a lot, too. It's so impressive how this fic could make you so emotional but then have you burst out laughing next. It was such an emotional rollercoster, but guess what? I didn't even mind it one bit. Every single moment of this fic was so worth reading. I would list my favourite moments, but there were so many that I wouldn't know where to stop! Although, let's say that Kenjirou naming his cat Princess Motherfucker is what made me committ to this fic– mind you that was just 6 paragraphs in!
If I could recommend one fic and one fic only, I would recommend this one.

Oh, where do I even begin… I first read this fic years ago back in 2021, and now, over five years later in 2026, it still hits like crack.
This fic is wonderfully written. Semi's and Shirabu's characterisation were so spot on, and their interactions as well as their interactions with their other teammates were so entertaining. It’s so worth the read and the re-read. Not a single moment of this fic was boring. Truly the SemiShira bible.

The other kids at the orphanage aren’t necessarily unkind, but it’s clear they don’t understand him. They find him strange— too subdued— unnerving. They complain that he only seems to speak to correct them. It isn’t Kurapika’s fault they don’t know anything about the world.
In the light of the day he tells himself that he’s fine on his own. That he doesn’t need anyone new. That the experience of having everyone he ever loved taken from him has cooled his heart to affection.
But he is only nine, and life is long.

(In which a bored Childe thinks he’s scaling up mountains to fight adepti and gain bountiful gifts for his nation and all that jazz, but he actually ends up wooing one of them and fighting favour from the rest and-- uh, wait, what do you mean the eccentric rock enthusiast is the emperor--)

Perhaps my favourite ZhongChi fic ever. The fact that everyone and absolutely everyone but Childe himself knew just who he was engaged to was was so hilarious. Both of them were so oblivious and dense in this fic, and I think that's beautiful.
