Ryan and Shane have been moving around something that is coming to a head between them. After a car accident, on the way to an investigation, Ryan slowly starts to become suspicious that Shane might not be what he seems. He realizes, though, that he just might not care.
Shane sits forward suddenly. “Hey, pull over up here.”
Ryan follows the instruction without questioning it, which probably says something about either his willingness to listen to Shane or his sanity. Maybe both; they go hand in hand. He puts on his blinker, even though they haven’t seen another car in a couple of minutes, and pulls off onto the shoulder.
“Are you gonna puke or something?” he asks, putting the car into park, as Shane takes off his seatbelt with one hand and tugs off his Ray Bans with the other.
“You better hope not,” he murmurs as he leans over the center console and kisses Ryan solidly on the mouth.

“Ryan.” Shane breaks off and sits down again, slides his chair closer to Ryan’s, stares him down. “God, fuck, look at me, okay, I did this. I did this, this is my case, this is mine, everything you’re talking about—”
Ryan can’t help it: he laughs. It comes out a little anxiously, but it’s a laugh all the same, because Shane can’t really expect him to buy into this, right?
And Shane looks—well, murderous is either the wrong word or the right one. “I’m not kidding.”
“You really want me to believe—”
“You entertain all possible theories, right?” Shane says, exasperated and angry, and Ryan notices it’s the first time he’s ever said that seriously. “That’s what this stupid show is—that’s what you do. So entertain this one.”
All at once, it stops being funny. Something the size of a golf ball seems to lodge itself high in Ryan’s throat. He realizes it’s alarm, fear, a caged bird thrashing against the bars inside himself. He’s waiting for Shane to break, to burst into laughter, to say it’s all a stupid joke, but it doesn’t happen.
“What the fuck,” he croaks out.

It backfires on him spectacularly, forcing him to confront Feelings which have gone unspoken and largely unacknowledged even in his private thoughts, but it has interesting side effects on his and Stan's friendship. Whatever the results, Richie will go to his grave swearing it's all Bev's fault.

Now, lying in bed in a shitty motel after driving for ten hours straight because Richie hadn’t wanted to stop and he’d fallen asleep in the passenger seat, with Richie sprawled beside him and the TV playing crackly advertisements, he realises he’s in love. There’s nowhere else he’d rather be, not really. Nowhere except in a car, with his boyfriend who might be his boyfriend, who’s only sort of his boyfriend because they haven’t really talked about it yet, on the way to Los Angeles so he can get his name in lights.

The man brushed his wet hair off of his forehead, and took off his glasses, attempting to clean off the raindrops with his damp jacket, but it didn’t help at all. “Do you have the new Keith Urban album? Or, I think it’s his new one… the one with his cover of Romeo’s Tune?”
“Yeah.” Richie confirmed, and now looking at this guy… Something was clicking. Something frustrating and fuzzy in the back of his mind that was screaming You know him!

Please come with running clothes, a baseball mitt, running shoes, and cleats.“Oh, fuck no,” Richie says. He doesn’t even need to read the whole thing to know that this isn’t his jam. Nothing about this has is name on it and no. Fuck no. This isn’t happening.
Except it is.
Richie takes solace in his inability to play any kind of physical sport ever. He knows he’ll hate this, but he also knows he won’t make the team. Not in a million years.
