The first time Lucanis saw Rook, he thought a desire demon was attempting to entrance him. There was no other explanation for how the man of every fantasy he could ever imagine was right there in front of him—in the Ossuary, of all places.
Then Rook spoke, and Lucanis was brought back to reality, because in his perfect fantasy, there was no way his dream man would speak with a Tevene accent. But Rook did. Then he loosed an arrow straight into a Venatori’s face, instantly dropping him. Lucanis froze for a second, as Spite growled, “MINE!”

That simultaneous sound, barely held back by their lips, drew a shared half-smile from them, as if that simple gesture symbolized a silent truce between the two.
