“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

this is more than a fanfic. i’ve never read anything that explores the intricacies of mike will and els relationship like this. in a lot of ways, el took what belonged to will. the show never touched on that but this did. and talks deeply about the jealousy and melancholy that comes with that. el had her life ripped from her and will wrestles with the way he feels like he’s replaced her. this is honestly a story about el as much as it is about mike and will.
i appreciate the realism of being queer in the 90s. once again ive never read a story this grounded in regards to that. a lot of fics jump into will and mike already having the perfect idea of sex and doesnt tap into the fear of being gay in a time when it wasnt accepted and in a place where that kind of knowledge wouldnt be accessible. how the hell would they have known to have sex im crying. not hating on those stories at alm i eat those up but this one. this story delves into queer loneliness, with mike not really accepting he’s gay and will stepping into the queer nyc community like a baby duckling.
these two components make this my favorite byler fic by far. thank you author
