    Zelda blinks. “Sorry?”

He doesn’t look away. Funny Link. He doesn’t give up on putting his thoughts into words because he’s bad at public speaking but good at disaster, good at taking things apart, terrible at gluing them back together. Funny Link. He doesn’t breathe. When was the last time he breathed? Should she kiss him?

“It’s not okay, princess,” he says, and he sounds so goddamn sad, she has to stop laughing in her head for five whole minutes. “None of this is okay. Please don’t pretend it is. Please let me help you.”

The first rule of time travel: don't.

    Summary

“Let’s say you’ve been asleep for a hundred years and when you wake up you’ve lost all your memories, but you defeat the big bad monster like you’ve been told to, because a girl told you to, and because you were in love with her. And after defeating the big bad monster she comes back, only she’s not the person she was a hundred years ago. And you’re not the person you were a hundred years ago. And yet every time you look at her, your chest hurts so bad you think you might be dying.”

He looks up from his breadstick. “Am I dying?”

“No,” Beedle says. “I think you’re stupid.”

    All roads lead to Hateno.

He has a dream where she falls from Shatterback Point. He runs as fast as he can down the side of the mountain, cutting his palms on coral and bruising his knees on the wet rocky path, but when he gets to the bottom, no one’s there. You were too late, Muzu tells him, stroking his beard somberly. You tried to reach her, but you let go, and then you were too late. The water in the lake is bright as blood. The sky crackles silently above Muzu’s vacant eyes. A voice emerges from the lake.

You let me die, the voice says. I saved the world for you, and you let me die.

    Summary

"You know, Daruk’s my idol,” Yunobo says. He pumps his fists in the air like a kid at a fun fair in line for the big pirate ship ride. “They say he was the coolest Goron there ever was. Plus he had a beard. I think beards are awesome.”

“Great,” Sidon says. He stops peeling the mandarin in his hands for long enough to look up blankly at him. "Mipha was my sister."

“RHOAHOARHAGHOGHHHH,” said the lynel, who sounded significantly angrier than before.

“I understand,” Sidon said politely, and then closed his eyes and sent a prayer to the goddess Hylia (the way he had been taught to since he was old enough to speak, the way every child in Hyrule knew that there was a place for them to go to after they left this world behind). He braced for impact, which he hoped would be of the violent sort, earth-shattering and brisk enough to break his bones and leave nothing breathing in its wake. He was fifteen, not five. This was Ganon’s era. Every living creature in Hyrule knew this, the way their ancestors woke up and knew which direction the sun would rise from. Not if, but when. When the Calamity strikes. When your people die. When the knight emerges from the woods with the sacred sword in his hand, and saves you all.

The Goddess Statue shrugs. Bokoblins, it suggests. Mice. Ganon. It goes back to picking its nose. Her white funeral dress keeps billowing and billowing around her like her dead ancestors are trying to drag her body into the ground while behind her a boy with a sword shaped like salvation stares at the carvings on the wall, and wonders where they came from. It’s spring. The water’s cold. The sky’s black.
