“The name’s Daisuke, sir! I’m new here!” His voice was bright and peppy, untouched and yet-to-be-tainted by the cruel miasma of life. Not for much longer though, considering he had started at Pony Express.
“Oh no, really? I thought you were a veteran. I thought you had been working here longer than I was!” Swansea’s voice was laced with the same peppiness, though it was mocking and insincere.
“Huh? Really? But I don’t even have a lanyard yet!” The kid’s caramel-brown eyes widened, and Swansea resisted the urge to physically facepalm.This one, he hated most of all.

Instead, she offers him drinks, stickers, and no explanations. He offers the emotional stability of a rotting bookshelf.

Summary
What a stupid disease, Damian lamented, moving past denial of his circumstances and straight into resentment. The cure was equally stupid.
There were a few options to rid oneself of hanahaki, the first and simplest being that the sufferer could overcome their romantic feelings. Otherwise, they could make an unambiguous declaration of love, and if the recipient accepted, the sufferer would be healed. The latter choice was high-risk, it specifically required the sufferer to confess their feelings at the cost of the disease worsening should their love not be returned.
The third option was only a cure insofar as amputation is a cure for a broken finger, not an option anyone with any sense would dwell upon.

'Damian’s muscles tense up and he refuses to stand closer to that family. He doesn’t need anyone.
(That’s because he doesn’t have anyone.)
There’s no one next to him, and Damian thinks he doesn’t care. The weather’s pretty warm, yet he’s somehow shivering. He stares at his shoes. They look unreasonably small. He feels unreasonably small.
The cameraman tells them to smile. Damian thinks he does, but he doesn’t really remember. His cheek hurts from moving it, so smiling hurts.
If he looks to the right, he can see that commoner girl and her parents on the right end of the front row. Fitting how they’re situated completely opposite of him. He feels an odd stab in his heart when even that commoner girl has parents that came with her. That damned commoner girl who can see right through him and make him feel raw and exposed. She’s the only exception and Damian can’t help but be interested in her.
… It’s weird. Damian has his high status, he has everything, but he also lacks what everyone else has.
And it’s fine. It’s fine. It’s really fine because no matter what happens, Damian is still a Desmond. He still has his status and one girl cannot change that. He’s strong, he’s independent, and he’s fine. He really is!
The wind blows past him, carrying the chatter and laughter from the other families, and Damian suddenly shudders. He stands there, hands shoved in his pockets (because Mother’s not there to tell him off), and puts on a perfect expression of nonchalance even as his cheek throbs in pain.
… All things considered, Damian likes to think he’s doing pretty good on his first day at Eden.
(In the end, Damian muses, he’s a liar just like his father.)'
