Omega pauses.
Omega says, "FLIRTING. BADLY."
Shadow huffs, it's hard not to smile- so he stops fighting it, lets his mouth curl with the heat in his cheeks, Shadow says, "I wouldn't say that- I just didn't get it."

“I trust your hands,” Torse says, and heaves to his feet and snatches up a fallen naughtomaton’s spear and throws it two hundred feet into the air, puncturing the closest of the dinghies and sending it careening out of the sky into the one below. One of the Primarch soldiers falls, injured, to the deck, and Torse tears his head off and throws that too, knocking an attacker out of another craft.
“I’m going to let you rip me in half when this is over,” Max mumbles, involuntarily. Torse glances back at him with a humming chuckle.

Summary
After the crew lands in Zumhara and the Wind Riders have headed into the city, Torse goes in search of somewhere he can process everything, away from prying eyes. He does not process very well, but he's trying.
Maxwell experiences a perfectly justifiable level of mortal terror when he returns to find his friend missing, and overt declarations of lifelong devotion after 2 weeks of knowing each other is actually kind of a slow burn for Zood, okay?

“Why would she...? Oh.” Maxwell stiffens, then blows out a breath. He reaches past Torse’s mantle to clasp his neck, tucks them firmly together, and rhythmically brushes thumb across his vulnerable nape. “Oh, Torse.”His friend’s comfort breaks the dam. “What drove her to save me, when she was comfortable condemning so many to destruction? What had she found worthy of salvation within me that she deemed the rest of my homeworld to be lacking? Why am I not taken apart in the Amphereon, or walking as one of the Naughtomata, or lining the throat of that vile beast?”
Maxwell goes rigid.

Summary
Even if half the assertions made by the crew are complete nonsense, Torse can’t help but ponder over Marya’s offhand comments.
“Everyone gets cabin fever on a long voyage eventually! But really, if anyone needs to get laid, it’s Maxwell.”
Admittedly, Torse is still on shaky ground when it comes to understanding Gathie biology. What if Marya’s comment points to a more serious issue? Does sex fall into the same category as food and water and sleep? Do Gathies get sick if they go too long without sex? This ‘cabin fever’ that Marya spoke of? He’s starting to get slightly concerned for Maxwell’s wellbeing.

Summary
The children of Zern do not dream. They are not made capable of it, they do not need it, if they are left bereft of hearts they merely stand silent and sentinel until such an organ-machine is replaced. Torse is no different - he does not dream. Not technically.
The children of Zern can move a little without their hearts, for merely a few moments after the removal. Torse had told this to the crew of the Zephyr, upon meeting them.
He had not told them other things; due to some unknown cruelty, even disanimate, the children of Zern can hear. They can feel. They retain some distant awareness of light and dark, though not true sight. Forever doomed to be on the outside of a moving world, to know exactly what they are missing. Torse can distantly hear the crew of the Zephyr partying, drinking, without him. Ignore that he cannot drink - ignore that he fears what his iron heart would have him do - ignore that were he there, he would likely leave, too much noise and too many social rules to follow. Allow him some slight misery. Currently he has little else.

He’s not sure why it feels so urgent - they’ve spent a thousand nights like this. There are thousands more ahead of them, with any luck at all. But something about the way Hizashi looks right now feels fleeting and precious, like the blink of a firefly.
Shouta shoves the paper in front of him forward until Hizashi looks up. “You know, if we got married, we might qualify for a tax break.”
