Summary
Olethra was right when she said the Amphemereon was abandoned. The halls of the Corrodi are coated in a film of dust, disturbed only by the footprints of the crew of the Zephyr, but he feels uncomfortable regardless. His iron heart is only exacerbating the issue, the contempt he holds for the Corrodi strengthening that pit of fear forming at the back of his chest, the grief as he remembers the destruction of his comrades. How many of their parts were used in this place’s construction? Does he stand, even now, on the corpses of his brethren?

“D’you want a second helping of that?”
Bert considers Marya openly as she scarfs down her stew like a woman starving. She looks different like this, softer. More open, or at the very least more obvious about how closed off she is. There’s grease scuffed across one cheek and something dark under her fingernails. Her spoon clatters loudly, her gulps echoing in the relative silence of the galley. She lowers her bowl from her mouth, eyes lifting to appraise him over its rim. She says nothing.

Summary
Look. Pretending him and Torse were engaged had just seemed like the best idea at the time. And in both of their defence: Marya had been the one to accept the offer.
(Torse and Maxwell pretend to be betrothed so that Maxwell doesn't have to marry some duke's daughter. Things escalate.)

'I love you.'
There were moments in Maxwell's life when he knew it was expected of him to say those words. There were even times when he wanted to say them. But many times he didn't. Because it wouldn't feel right. Because it would feel too much like a goodbye. Because he simply couldn't bring himself to say it back.
(Sometimes he still can't. But maybe that's alright.)

Summary
You are falling. You do not expect to make it out of this - you do not deserve to make it out of this, you've ruined everything, you wretch, you ruin, you warmonger.
But there is something you must say, as you see Maxwell Gotch barrel towards you, an avenging angel, wingsuit spread, breaching the gap between worlds to chase you. You do not deserve his care. You do not deserve him. You are going to fall to your death, and you cannot make yourself into someone who is good enough for him, not with this heart, so easily overtaken.
“I always considered you a friend, Maxwell,” you say. You have to say it, say something, use your last words to try and convey an iota of how deep your affections for him lie. He may have been your first real friend, the closest thing to your gold-metal heart. You are going to die, here, in the space between worlds, and he will at least have known that you cared.
Talons come around you. Straka. Everything goes black, and the last of the Aganti Zernai is gone.

Summary
“Oh, I know this one!” Olethra exclaims. She leans over to the storybook, tapping upon the inscription of the flaxen haired maiden and the Guardians bristle. She doesn’t even seem to notice. “The prince scales her tower and whisks her away from the evil witch.”
Marya scoffs a little, her eyebrows raised in rare amusement. “Not in Scrapsylvania he doesn’t. He falls from the tower and is blinded, it’s only when they reunite and she weeps upon him that his sight is restored.”
“True Love’s kiss heals ‘im in The Uplands.”
“Isn’t that Sleeping Beauty?”
“Nah. My aunt read it to me all the time as a young lass, was absolutely—“
“It’s a load of nonsense either way,” Max interrupts, his tone harsher intended. He doesn’t know why this place has him so irked. “I mean, getting whisked away by a prince who just happened to stumble upon your tower? It’s unrealistic. And True Love’s kiss? They hardly know each other. And they don’t know each other in Sleeping Beauty.”

Summary
This isn’t the first time Maxwell Gotch has been pinned to the ground by Torse. This is the first time it’s scared him, though.
Even during their sparring matches, where neither would concede, where they both gave as good as they got, he never found himself in fear of the other. Even when Torse’s knife-like arms would press against his skin, even when he would bleed through his hand wrapping to land a hit, even when Torse’s punches would shatter the wood of the ship—if anything, these things thrilled Max, as mortifying it was to admit.
Now, as the sharp edge of Torse’s bladed knuckles crash sharply against his cheek, his own blood splattering onto the scrap that made up the floor, he finds that the thrill has something more skittish hiding in its undercurrent.
or: To buy his crew time, Maxwell must fight one of the Queen of Zern’s greatest warriors to the death. It just so happens to be Torse he’s up against.

Summary
On her own, Van never would’ve gone down to bloody Katur. She would’ve spent a pleasant evening with Bert in the hot tub, maybe helped him whip up a flight or two of aioli, and watched the nut pigs roll ‘round on deck. Even with Wealwell and Freyja onboard, she thinks it wouldn’t’ve been a half-bad way to spend a night. Instead, she’s here dropping things ‘cross the floor ‘cause she’s lost five fingers in one go.
She doesn’t recognise her reflection anymore. It’s like every time she sees herself, something is different—her eyes are darker, she’s rimmed in shadow, her blummin’ arm is gone. Something is happening to her, something far beyond her grasp. Everything Van’s known about herself, her family, her curse—all of it’s out the window now. The worst part is how good it feels.

Summary
Van watches Max strain against Marya’s grasp, his face turning red with effort, the tendons in his neck jumping out. “I will never. Don’t! Don’t! Don’t!” His pleas get increasingly frantic, sweat beading along his hairline, breath quickening. Van feels hers speed up along with it.
“Oh-kay, he really does refuse to submit,” Marya sing-songs, releasing him and standing up in one swift movement. Like it was never there, her manic grin vanishes, replaced by something much more approachable. Van feels the loss in her stomach. “I thought that might get him.”
The tonal whiplash is stunning. Van’s still reeling, images of Marya’s gloved hands in Gotch’s hair imprinted on the back of her eyelids every time she blinks. Her grip on Max’s ankles loosens just slightly, and he pulls them free.

Summary
“Miryam, darling, you’re brooding again and it’s really lowering the mood of the whole ship,” Wealwell said as he nudged her shoulder with his. He leaned against the railing next to her.
“Do you think there’s nothing to brood about? With everything that’s going on? That’s your brother down there, Wealwell. Is that not worth a little brooding?”
He hummed contemplatively.
“Yes, that is in fact my brother down there. Which means that brooding is the worst thing I can do. In fact, I would like to be doing the opposite of brooding, which would be not thinking about my brother on a dangerous underwater mission. And yet here you are, brooding, which is making me think about that. Do you see the problem?”
She sighed. Looking at it from his perspective… Wealwell seemed like a silly man, but she knew he was more than that. If he wanted some distraction, who was she to deny him that? He was her friend, she could support him.
“You’re the problem,” she joked, bumping shoulders with him again. “Alright, then, what are we doing if we’re not brooding?”
“Have you ever played King’s Cup?”

Summary
Maxwell felt…strange.
Not bad, necessarily. As far as he could tell, he wasn’t in any pain. But he didn’t feel particularly good, either.
Mostly he just felt a whole lot of…nothing.
That in itself wasn’t strange. Maxwell would be remiss to call himself an emotional man. He was a passionate one, however, and typically this time after a fight would be spent mentally going over each second of battle, relishing in the spiderwebs of pain that still stretched over his cracked knuckles.
But now? Now he wasn’t even positive that the hands he was looking at belonged to him.
It was all just very…strange.
Or: Maxwell (doesn't) deal with his newfound bloodlust. Van helps.

Exactly what the title says. Maxwell Gotch acquires an infant. The crew of the Zephyr is hilariously unhelpful.
