Summary
On her first voyage she quickly learns that a hearty meal three times a day is not an eternal promise of life. The food on board consists of what will last longest in harsh environments. Chock full of preservatives and often having the texture or consistency of nearly dried adhesive. It is tacky and stale, often leaving a bitter aftertaste circling in your saliva.
This first voyage also teaches her that the comfort of a plush warm bed is not guaranteed. In fact, she knows that she is lucky to have a proper bed in the ship at all. Squirrelled away in the corner of the captain's quarters, near the very spot she had been born, was a little child sized bed bolted into the walls and ground. The mattress is a slab of concrete, and the comforter a sheet of paper.
OR: An exploration of Van Chapman, absence, and the domesticity of kitchens and beds.

"She's really in trouble?"
They don't have to say who.
"Seems like."
"That's just like her," says Monty. Something unreadable, there, in the way that he says it.
"She's always been like that," says Daisuke, non-committal.
In which the new crew of the Zephyr's search for Comfrey MacLeod goes exactly the same as it does in canon: until it doesn't.

Summary
People would call her the Professor’s Guard Dog. A moniker Van took with pride, a moniker that sparked something bizarre in her chest. A fluttering joy, a spreading warmth. Comfrey’s mutt. That’s who she was. When out on voyages by sea to gather the materials necessary for this project Van made sure to shield the professor. Sure, she’s younger than the professor, but she’s been battle hardened since the day she was born. That was the way of the Chapman’s. For this Comfrey made sure she was fed and kept warm at night.
When Comfrey barked an order, Van obeyed, no question about it.
OR: The foundation of the Zephyr is filled with messy entanglements, all stemming back to those sleepless nights Van spent with Comfrey.

Summary
“Yes, Zood will be facilitating the treaties themselves,” answered Longspot, “But if we were to wait until the treaties were over to have a working relationship with Zern, then we would lose out on many innovations and insights from them. We need to ensure your grandfather’s legacy. The quickest legal connection we could make that would allow us to have the necessary relationship would be for you to marry a prominent figure from Zern”.
Maxwell’s mind stalled. “I need to marry someone from Zern? Aren’t they primarily Automata?”
Longspot squeezed Maxwell’s shoulder. “Maxwell. It would only be until we have a signed treaty, at which point you can annul the marriage and marry a proper girl from Gath. I can’t ask any of your older brothers to do this, Maxwell. Only you understand how important Gath’s relations with Zood and Zern were to your grandfather”.

Summary
After the end of their adventure, Torse had a duty to stay behind and help rebuild Zern to its former glory while Maxwell needed to return to Gath. Max swore to return once Comfrey had managed to find a way to control what time they could return to, but there was no telling how long that would take. Or if it was even possible. The risk of being sent to the far past or future was too great to return unless it was certain. There wasn't much Maxwell could do when the weeks apart stretched into months and, soon enough, years.

I've failed. Again, I've left Zern in no better state than it was.
What a sorrowful thing. To be awake in his homeland, for mere moments, in the most hellish place imaginable, only to flee right back to Zood.In which Torse loses himself and Maxwell helps him return.

Summary
It starts—as most things on the Zephyr do—as a drunken bit.
“Gotch.” Van says solemnly. Her flesh hand shoots out to grip his shoulder tightly. Her eyes burn into his skull. “I’m gonna be your dad.”
Maxwell blinks. “What?”
“Your father is an absolute arse, and if he doesn’t want you, I call dibs. I’m your new da.”
Or: Longspot Gotch sucks. Van, ever the problem-solver, steps up.

Summary
Something snaps inside of her. "You should not have saved me," Marya hisses again, with a sudden burst of vitriol. She snatches her hand away from Comfrey's hold, ignores Monty's attempts to intervene in favour of glaring with a sudden rage at the woman before her. "You should have left me behind! Ludmila— she was waiting for me. She built that door because she had not wanted me to suffer entering Zern the same way she did, and she waited, she waited—"
The pressure builds, until it hits a breaking point. Tears leaking from her eyes, a lump wedging itself in her throat, the urge to bow over and curl into herself and sob seizing her soul. Marya forces it down, buries it despite how hard it threatens to finally spill out, the last of her control cracking and crumbling down. "If I was there," she gasps, "then Mila— Ludmila would not have waited, would not have become what she is now; would not have suffered, would not have had her heart torn out."
In the aftermath of their escape from Zern, in the wake of everything Marya has discovered—
She finally breaks.

When Torse awakes from the nightmare of metal wings and falling skies to the sounds of his lost homeland, surrounded by the wastes of grief and rage that were once his kin, the only thing he had left was the vision of Maxwell falling towards him with hands outstretched. Summary
The others were occupied, and so he knabbed the ring once more. He wound the chain around his fingers absently, tried the band on each finger. It fit some but not well, too tight or too loose or just plain wrong. Fine by him, he wasn’t gonna go around wearing his ex-wife’s wedding ring anyhow. If he wanted to flaunt his failed relationship, he had his own damn ring to do it with.

Summary
Van has thought about her inevitable death at length. Of course she had—it is the prerogative of her family, after all. She had imagined herself accepting it with honour, surely going down fighting; but the reality of finally joining her forefathers in the deep when she had had a taste of the sky? Well... This simply can't be it.
