Summary
Shane can look back now and see whole years lit up with significance he’d missed the first time, every hesitation made obvious by hindsight, every joke carrying a bruise beneath it, every ordinary morning suddenly ripe with meaning because it’d been ordinary and he hadn’t known to kneel before it. He can know all of it now. He can know too late so well it feels almost like a prophecy, but in reverse.
It changes fuck all. Ilya’s still dead.
Shane is alone, now.
Or: the first year without Ilya.

Summary
Shane runs while the canal lies black beside him, and he thinks: maybe Irina wouldn’t have liked me.
Maybe she would’ve looked at him and seen exactly what he fears there is to see: all that restraint, all that carefulness, all the ways he kept his hands clean at the cost of her son.
Maybe there isn’t much to like in a man who loved Ilya with everything he had and still ended up with him hospitalized, begging strangers to help him get better.
Shane is completely, irrevocably in love. If only that came with instructions for what to do when his husband checks into a mental health clinic forty-three minutes away.

Summary
He should be looking at the clock. Should be watching the game. Should be breathing through his nose, getting his heart rate down, considering the next shift, the next face-off, the next action. That’s what Shane Hollander does. That’s what Shane Hollander’s always done. It’s the great moral framework of his life, really—pressure arrives, and he reduces it to tasks. Tie the skate. Make the pass. Answer the question. Stand in front of the microphone. Don’t flinch when other men call your husband something awful under their breath. Don’t chase the ref after a bad call. Don’t look at Ilya when he skates past during warm-ups. Do not, under any circumstances, let the world know where the softest part of you lives.
But the softest part of him is dead and sitting across the ice. So Shane looks.
Shane Hollander and the impossible hallucinations of ghosts and grief visions.

Summary
I have spent the last few months trying to understand how a mother is meant to keep breathing after burying her child. I still don't know. What I do know is this: over the last few years, I have lost two sons, and lived through a kind of grief I didn't know a person could survive. The first was Ilya. The second was Shane.
Yuna Hollander eulogizes her sons.

Summary
“You treat me like I'm made of glass, Shane. You act like I'm about to break, like I am this close to ruining everything.” Ilya’s voice drops to a whisper. “It makes me feel like I'm just work to you.”
Shane’s composure fractures. “Because I’m scared!" He drags a hand through his hair, breathing harder. "And—and so are you! You don’t have to pretend you’re not, it’s fine to say it. I’m fucking scared, okay?”
There it is. The underbelly of this whole argument. And Ilya sees it—the chink in Shane’s armor, the exposed place, the honesty, the fear—and instead of softening, something in him hardens. “Scared of me,” he says, already deciding that's what he heard.
“No,” Shane says, immediately. “No, not of you. Just scared. Of this whole situation. Of not knowing what to do, or what to say. Of messing up." A beat. "Scared of losing you.”
And it should be sweet, should land as devotion, but it just makes Ilya’s chest ache. His smile twists, bittersweet. “But maybe you are already losing me. Have you thought of that?”
Every day, there's less of me left, he wants to say.
Love changes Ilya's life, but it doesn't save it.
It doesn’t have to.

Summary
“If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?” Quickly, Ilya adds, “Don’t say that you want to know if you win the Cup.”“Why not? What if that’s my answer?”
“Is so boring, Hollander. Of course you want to know this. But Ilya Rozanov and Boston Raiders exist in this world, so crystal ball says, so sad, but no.”
“Fuck off. What are these questions even for, anyway? Are you interviewing me for something? Wouldn’t you have to, like, tell me if you were?”
Ilya is quick to assure Hollander before his paranoia takes him right out of this phone call. “It is not for interview, Hollander. I am just wondering. Answer the question.”
“And I can’t say that I would want to know whether I win the Cup.”
“Yes, other than that.”
“I guess… I guess I would want to know, like, am I happy?”
Ilya reads an article about 36 questions that are supposed to make people fall in love. He decides to ask Shane. -

Summary
“I’m trying to figure out,” Rose wonders aloud. “Are you always a complete prick? Just with women? Or just when you lose a game?”
Ilya barks a laugh, shocked and almost delighted, and his smile spreads wide enough that Rose can see all those pearly whites of his that are so much nicer than she expected any hockey player’s to be. “All the time,” he grins, “all the time. However much of an asshole Hollander has told you I am, double it.”
She answers truthfully, shrugs her shoulders in her tiny silver dress. “He hasn’t mentioned you at all.”
After a shitshow of an evening in a Montreal nightclub, Ilya wakes up the next morning in Shane’s bed. Only, he’s not in Shane’s bed — Rose Landry is, and he’s in Rose Landry’s body, and she’s in his. Well, what the fuck are they supposed to do with that?

Summary
“Well, Rozanov can’t afford the rehab he needs to get back to the league,” Shane said. “So I’ll pay for it.”
“And—” Ilya began.
“And whatever else he needs to get by until he gets himself another contract,” Shane said. As Shane spoke, Ilya largely kept his eyes on the money manager. He’d never gotten to watch someone realize Shane was insane before. The reigning NHL MVP can't cover the costs of his recovery after getting in an off-season car wreck. Shane adds Ilya Rozanov to his investment portfolio.
