The silence following was deafening, as Caitlyn looked away guiltily and Vi realised with clenched teeth that actually, yes, it seemed she did need to tell her that. Vi wanted to shove her fist through a wall thinking about how stupid she had been to not see this earlier. Not see the tired sunken eyes and the fake smile as Caitlyn worked herself to the bone, all for what?

A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”
