And Bucky has to finally be strong, because they can't keep going like this. He can't. So he leaves. And now he's just left with memories.

Steve clenches his jaw and goes for the box, unfolding the top flaps to see what’s inside. And what’s inside is…well, it somehow feels like all the oxygen leaves the room as he sees what’s inside. Because it’s his things and clothes and trinkets and memories. Things he left at Bucky’s place. Things he gave Bucky. Things Bucky treasured. Shoved into a box haphazardly.
Steve swallows as he stares at the items in the box, because suddenly this all makes sense and it’s the kind of sense that makes Steve feel a little like he’s dying. “D-did he say anything else?” he asks, voice cracking. “Bucky?” he clarifies. “When he was here?”
“Yes, Captain,” Friday answers. “He said to say goodbye.”

In the third part of the Maybe series, our Steve went back in time to get the stones to reverse the snap. But he made a stop off to save Bucky in the 2012 timeline. This is what happened to the 2012 versions of Bucky and Steve after our Steve altered things.

“I, um, I was hoping to see Captain Rogers?” Bucky replies, cringing a little. He knows this is ridiculous. There’s pretty much no chance they’ll let him up, but he still felt the strange need to try.
“Do you have an appointment?” she asks, as expected.
“Um, no,” Bucky admits. “I just wanted to, um, thank him. He sort of saved my life last week.”
The receptionist gives him an insipid smile. “Captain Rogers saves a lot of people,” she replies, giving him an almost pitying look.

Steve felt numb as he waited for his train to arrive. He sat on the cold metal bench, feeling the chill in the November air, shoulders slumped over as they had been for the last twenty minutes. But it wasn’t the cold making him numb.
No, everything else in his life had just come crashing down and he couldn’t process it. So he sat there, barely thinking anything except ‘how could this have happened’, waiting crestfallen and alone.

“From now on, our troubles will be miles away…” Bucky joins in.
Dancing round their living room, just as in love as ever, their troubles seem light-years away, if not non-existent.
Sadly, they’re closer than they think.

The first time really was legitimate. The hot tap in the kitchen started leaking and Sam decided Bucky’s method of sticking a bucket under it wasn’t sufficient. And apparently just because Bucky worked from home most days, that meant he had to deal with calling their apartment manager to let them know, so they’d send someone to fix it.
Sometimes Bucky hated being an adult.

When Steve volunteered to take the stones back, Bucky had an inkling that he was hiding something. But he played his part. He recited their old goodbye. They shared a hug so quick that Bucky barely felt it. Bucky tried to let that be that, but he couldn’t help it. He told Steve he’d miss him. And Steve told him it would be okay, and that was when Bucky knew. Steve was supposed to be gone for five seconds, their time, so why did that sound so much like a goodbye? But Bucky didn’t know what to do. He stepped back, forced a smile onto his face, that he knew didn’t reach his eyes, and he let him go. It took everything he had in him, but he did it.
He was certain he’d just said goodbye to Steve Rogers for the last time.

When Steve is seventeen, his mother dies. With no one to take care of him, he will be taken to the castle as a slave. But Steve won’t let that happen. He runs. He runs straight into the one place everyone knows to never go into—the seemingly endless maze on the outskirts of town. He doesn’t expect to be alive in the morning. He doesn’t expect a lot of things. He certainly doesn’t expect to meet someone else in the maze.

“I choose death over you!” Steve yells back, unable to fight the smile on his face.
Rumlow looks like he’s about to snarl a reply except Steve doesn’t get to hear it because the hedges of the maze suddenly move in front of his eyes and the entrance is closed off. The men are no longer there—he can’t even hear them. And Steve’s giddiness evaporates into resignation, because now it is over.
No one goes into the maze. Because no one ever comes out.

Summary
Bucky’s not going home for Christmas. But it’s fine. He’s spending Christmas alone in his apartment, but it’s cool. He’s not feeling up to seeing his family after his accident anyway, plus he has to work. He’s totally fine with it. But then he runs into Steve, literally, and suddenly his Christmas isn’t looking so empty after all.

Hurrying was a bad idea. Bucky’s foot hits a patch of ice and slides out from under him in what would have been a comical cartoon banana-peel-like trip, if it wasn’t happening to him, and he braces himself to hit the ground. This is going to hurt.
“Fuck,” Bucky screeches, but as he lands on his back, it’s not the cold hard concrete he expected, but a solid mass beneath him. Oh god, Bucky thinks as he realises he smacked into the person behind him and took them down with him.

When Steve awoke he wasn’t sure where he was at first. Everything was fluffy around him. It took him a moment to open his eyes and focus.
He was in his room, in his bed and he was...surrounded by pillows?
Steve blinked and looked around. It seemed like every pillow, cushion and soft furnishing in his apartment had been dumped on his bed. Actually, no, not dumped, he realised. They’d been placed all around him, forming a sort of cocoon. He looked round at them all and his eyes found Bucky, sitting on the floor at the side of the bed, knees up to his chest, arms wrapped round them, watching Steve.
