Felix watched as Dimitri gathered up his papers, shuffling them slowly, absently. Something was wrong. There was something he wasn’t telling him. “What else did Sylvain say?”
The silence lasted a second too long. "He said —" Dimitri stopped, hesitating for another excruciating moment, before he lifted his head to meet Felix’s gaze. “He said he was getting married.”
Felix stared at him, unable to even muster up anger at the sight of pity on Dimitri’s face. It felt as though a sudden wind had blown over him, extinguishing the growing flicker of hope he had pretended he didn’t have. “Oh,” was all he managed to push out of his throat.

Sylvain needs to suck it up, and Sylvain needs to tell Felix about all the things he never had the guts to tell him before so Felix can properly reject him without taking the risk of hurting the company atmosphere, now that Sylvain’s leaving anyway, and Sylvain needs to laugh at that because he’ll never see him again and he’ll never talk to him ever again anyway, and Sylvain needs to delete his contact from his phone and move on to the next one, like he’s always done before."

Felix had argued vehemently, while Ingrid ripped the room apart to find clothing for them to wear and Sylvain listened at the cracked door to the soldiers downstairs informing the unimpressed brothel owner that they were conducting a routine search for spies from the Kingdom and would need access to all customer rooms, that there was no good reason he had to wear the costume and Sylvain got to keep (most of) his own clothes on.
Sylvain had—heroically, he thinks—refrained from saying either “You’re prettier” or “You’re so much smaller,” both of which are absolutely true and either of which would have earned him at least a minor stabbing.
