Hubert smirked. “Then you don’t care that I see the benefit of this?”
Edelgard looked up at him. “Of course I care. It means you are an impostor.”
That actually caused Hubert to chuckle.

Right on time, one of Hubert’s agents arrives with a message for him. She freezes when she sees the flower crown on Hubert’s head, but she doesn’t dare to comment. Hubert waves Dorothea out of his office.
“Please excuse us. This report is confidential.” It’s not.
Dorothea is a smart woman. She probably knew a convenient dismissal when she heard one. She grabs a handful of papers, throws them at Hubert’s face, and angrily stomps out of the room.

“No,” El said, after considering that for a moment. Then she grinned, a wide smile accompanied with burning eyes and determination etched into her every line. The sight took Hubert’s breath away. “I liked the [stories] where I sympathized with the monster too much.”
Hubert ducked his head, and took a moment to pull himself back together. He hadn’t realized until now, just how much he’d missed El. He had to cough before he spoke, lest his too tight throat gave him away.
“Can I tell you a secret, El?” he muttered, looking up at her from under his bangs. “So did I.”

In the weeks after Dorothea proposed—proposed, sometimes she still can’t believe she did that—she occasionally wondered whether she’d made a mistake. Hubert certainly seemed to think so. He had a bit of a dazed look about him every time they spoke in the intervening time. But in the end, it all worked out so wonderfully. Some days she really doesn’t trust it. When has anything in her life ever been this easy?
But it is easy, with Hubert. With him and the professor and Edie. He’s so sweet in his own serious way. Dorothea feels so safe in his arms, almost relaxed. She always thought love was meant to be exciting, and oh, it is. It makes her heart beat faster and her skin tingle and her toes curl, but it also fills her with such a lovely warm closeness when Hubert touches her, like a bath drawn at just the right temperature. She could luxuriate in it for hours.

She’d asked Hubert for lessons, once. On killing fathers. Just in case she ever happens to meet her own again. He’d taken her seriously in a way she thinks no one else in the world would; he’d gotten down on his knees and vowed to do the job himself, if it ever came to that. He offered to find him for her. To cut his throat while she watched. And he meant it, every word falling venomous from his mouth, cutting and beautiful.
And people don’t think he’s a romantic.

Their journey is aimless, as Korra guides Asami through the flowering field and into a copse of spindly trees. They stop every now and again, with Korra showing Asami small things that she had discovered during her past visits into the Spirit World—long crocuses that become butterfly spirits with just a gentle touch, and draping leaves that shimmer and sparkle with silver light when brushed against by a hand. Asami marvels at each small wonder, and every incredulous smile makes Korra think yes, this is right. This is what Asami needs in order to escape from her grief. This is what Korra needs in order to heal—a vacation, she tells herself, a small break is what she needs, but a smaller, deeper part of her knows the truth.
She needs Asami right now.
