Humans could continue to be selfish, and arrogant as if they didn't need the adepti to protect them. But Xiao would still be here, just like Rex Lapis standing beside him.
For a thousand years, they built Liyue through thousands of wars. For a thousand years, they guided Liyue into peacetime. And for Rex Lapis, only for Rex Lapis, Xiao would continue to protect Liyue for a thousand more.

It disgusted him, enraged him, and he promised himself that he'd never let anyone get so close to him again, both for his sanity and the other's safety. Affection was never for weapons of war, after all.
