Eddie shakes his head, so fucking fond and amused that this is the man he'd fallen head over heels for.
He doesn't think anything of it when Buck tells them that he's going to grab some air—something they've all done at this very club a hundred times, each of them familiar

Things don't go exactly as planned when Eddie gets to Texas. He has a Near Death Experience about it on the way to pick Chris up from school.

Helena and Ramon refuse to tell Buck or anyone from the 118 that Eddie has been placed in a medically induced coma after a car accident. For the first time, Chris begins to see through his grandmothers lies.
Through a school project about PTSD Chris learns a lot about himself, Buck, and his father.
Buck gets a call at midnight from a very upset Chris. He catches the first flight into El Paso he can find.

Eddie Diaz does not panic.
Or that's the lie he's been telling himself and everyone who will listen for as long as he can remember. It was second nature to save face, the lie poised on the tip of his tongue from a lifetime of hiding and burying himself deep down, out of sight, out of mind. It took Eddie a long time to break those chains, to escape from El Paso and all its expectations—to escape the pressure his parents constantly impressed upon him.
Eddie had to teach himself how to cut and run when necessary; that's how he'd ended up in LA after all—but that also meant he needed to be strong and unbreakable too—just the way his parents taught him to growing up.

When the Buckley parents are even more awful than Buck remembered, he and Eddie make it their mission to give the entire Buckley family the most hellish holidays possible. Oh, and they fall in love along the way.

____“Have I ever told you that you’re pretty?” Those words leave Buck’s mouth without hitting his filter, which has been temporarily deactivated due to 4 tequila shots, a cocktail, 2 shots of vodka, and a jello shot—Eddie looks over at him syrupy slow.
“You think I’m pretty?” The words are slightly mocking, like he doesn’t really believe Buck is saying those words meaningfully.
Buck does, though—think he’s beautiful. From his stupid superman curl to his bitchy smirk—his giant brown eyes that could potentially hypnotize Buck should Eddie try—his nose, the beauty mark under his eye, the bow of his lips—Buck was gone on this beautiful man. This beautiful, petty, soft, goofy man with a heart of gold who was an equally wonderful father. How was Evan Buckley not supposed to fall for a man like this? But even Buck knows that Eddie is so far out of his league to ever be his. But Buck could dream. He could dream through a blurry, liquored-up haze.

The expressionless voice is unfamiliar and distant, the words nonsensical. It rattles away in his brain, like loose nails in a truck bed on an unpaved road. He reaches for them like they are a physical entity, tries to wrap his fingers and sluggish brain around them. Even as he fights and reaches, they’re eons away—but they seem to trigger some instinct in his body. Like a moth to a flame, he’s drawn to their magnetic pull, and the allure is temporarily strong enough to bring him out of his stupor. He comes back into himself slowly; the first thing that returns is pain. There’s a crushing, merciless weight on his chest; he flails helplessly—Buck isn’t sure which way is up.
Second is exhaustion—it’s the bone-deep sort of weariness that turns your limbs to lead and your brain to pulp. Each movement is like swimming through setting cement. Buck is half tempted to just let the tide take him to the abyss that surely resides somewhere below.

Buck is forced to go on a temporary medical leave after getting crushed by a flight of stairs. In the meantime, he works at dispatch while he recovers. One evening after work, Buck hooks up with a mysterious, hot, family oriented DILF. The following morning he’s mortified and a little love sick after discovering said hook-up aka Eddie Diaz is the newest (temporary) firefighter liaison--poached from a house in El Paso, Texas. “Oh, Eddie.” Karen says, sounding torn between horror, delight, and laughter. “Oh, Eddie.” Peels of laughter ensue shortly after, when neither of his friends are able to hold them in a moment longer. “You broke Hen. You broke her!” Karen is giggling, and given the violent rustling on the other end of the line, he’s pretty sure she’s shaking Hen in an attempt to revive her. “Babe, come back to me! Come back!”
“How am I ever supposed to go back there? I can never look that man in the face again. The worst part is that he knows Buck. I want to die a gruesome, bloody death. It's the only option other than never showing my face there ever again.” There are more peels of delight on the other end of the line.

Eddie is emotionally and physically unprepared for the sight that greets him. The tiny cat is perched on Buck's shoulder. She scrambles down his bicep onto his forearm, then climbs up his other arm to perch on the other shoulder. She looks so tiny against Buck’s massive arms. Eddie all but swoons when Buck tilts his head down to snuggle his cheek against the kitten's miniature face. Eddie might die. He’s going to fucking die. His best friend holds her so carefully, still flushed and giggly and pleased. She paws at his face, and he tries to lean away. When she dramatically loses her balance, he catches her in one of his palms.
“I see you two are getting acquainted.” Eddie says his voice comes out rough and raspy, drawing Buck’s attention as he cradles Eddie’s cat in his hands.
“You didn’t tell me you got a cat!”
OR
Eddie adopts a cat while Chris is at summer camp. He goes to therapy and comes out to his parents. He continues navigating life post gay realization while being deeply and embarrassingly in love with his best friend.
Buck pines over Eddie.
Chris figures it only a matter of time before they finally get together.
