It is Kai who ends up gently prying his hands away, kneeling on the floor, sandwiched between Soobin’s legs. He is looking up at Soobin like he is a much better person than he actually is. Kai laces their fingers together and brings their hands against his face and it didn’t matter if Soobin had said anything different, Kai was always building up to this: “It’s always been you, Soobin-hyung.” Kai is stubborn like that.

“Um.” Kai feels a little ridiculous. Look, he loves plushies and all, but only in the capacity of them being soft and cute. A plush coming to life is not very high on his wishlist. “What’s your name?”
“Yeonjun,” the cat plush says after a short pause. Kai ponders shortly on why the name sounds so familiar when his doorbell rings.
“I’ll be right back, Yeonjun-ssi. Don’t...move?”
“I can’t,” is the dry response, and Kai smiles at the unexpected humor. He doesn’t know whether he’s relieved or disappointed when he comes back and sees ‘Yeonjun’ still sitting upright on his bed.

“Kai-yah,” he hears someone hiss, and he almost flinches when he sees Beomgyu, who pats the empty seat next to him.
“Thank you,” Kai murmurs as he takes a seat next to him.
“I didn’t know you were in this class,” Beomgyu whispers, and then he spends the next 45 minutes chatting Kai’s ears off. Beomgyu seems content with Kai’s occasional hums and nods, and Kai is content with watching Beomgyu more than his professor.

“I always do,” Beomgyu says innocently, and Kai buries his face in his hands.
“That’s what you said the last three times.” When he lifts his head, a pout is sitting heavy on his lips. “You have to promise me. No loops, no drops, no speeding.”
“Speeding?” Beomgyu says amusedly. It’s a Muggle term, but he knows what Kai means. “I’ll try my best for my favorite Hufflepuff.”
Kai shrugs him off dramatically. “You said Soobin-hyung was your favorite two days ago.”

It’s cold, but the thin layer of snow around them is already starting to melt from the heat of the bonfire. Kai keeps a singular focus on his marshmallow. He likes it slightly charred.
“Holding up okay?” Soobin murmurs, and Kai nods, tries to make the gesture come off as relaxed and natural. From Soobin’s soft sound of sympathy, maybe he doesn’t quite accomplish that.

They do not talk about the kiss Kai sneaks one time at the McDonald’s on the way home, when he pulls their hoodies close together at the corner table.
They do not talk about Kai staying in Soobin’s bed at the dorms or vice versa where they’d been so wrapped up in each other it was impossible to tell where one started and the other ended.
And they do not talk about the last kiss the night before their official debut.
