    Wangji stays on the piano bench as they’re closing up. Wei Ying chews his lip, knowing what he’s going to do but horrified at himself. But what’s the alternative: kick the guy out and find him sleeping beside the dumpster in the morning? And that’s if the cops don’t take him in for vagrancy.

    “Wangji?”

    Wangji looks up.

    Please don’t be a serial killer. “So, we’re closing up for the night, but A-Yuan and I live upstairs. Do you want to join us for dinner?”

    Wangji blinks. His head bobs in what’s probably a yes.

    “Great!”

     

    Fuck.

     

    Or a ragged monosyllabic man wearing a collar shows up at Wei Ying's music store. Wei Ying and A-Yuan ask, is anyone going to adopt this guy? And then they don't wait for an answer.

    Gojo merely grins at them. “Well, isn’t it quite too bad that I’m your only teacher then? You’re stuck with me! But fear not, I use my best friend to check my moral compass for me—it’s a very effective method.”

    “You actually have a best friend, Gojo-sensei?” Kugisaki asks, flabbergasted. “I didn’t even think you had any friends.”

    “Kugisaki, that’s like, kinda rude of you.” Itadori waves a finger at her.

    “I have friends!” Gojo laughs, slapping at the board again as he ignores the two’s tussling. Megumi withers into his seat. “I do have friends. I have friends.”

    Megumi arches an eyebrow at him. “Saying it thrice undermines the validity of your statement.”

    “So rude, Megumi! But really, Suguru was my moral compass. He was so great! So great. Absolutely awesome. It’s really too bad he went genocidal.”

    That Gojo can talk so casually about his ex-best friend, ex-something more is a cause of great amusement to some and concern for others. And great annoyance for all, undeniably.

    Lan Wangji walks forward, extending his senses for some sign of the magic confining them. But there is nothing. One moment, he is walking away from the village. The next, Wei Wuxian stands in the road ahead of him, the dizi tracing lazy arcs in the air.

    He stops and looks behind him. The view has not changed. He stands there, helpless. Baffled. Like a koi circling a pond, eternally struggling to go nowhere.

    “Messes with your head, doesn’t it?”

    He turns to Wei Wuxian, who regards him calmly, almost pityingly. Wei Wuxian has endured this for months. Months. Lan Wangji wants to scream. He wants to batter down this cage and fly away without looking back.

    Or while returning from a night hunt, Lan Wangji is trapped in a strange village that is terrorized by monsters. However, an intriguing cultivator named Wei Wuxian is also trapped there, so it isn't all bad. And guess what? They have to be roommates.
