As part of his community service after getting out of prison, Zabuza takes part in a program that temporarily partners ex-cons with disenfranchised and troubled youths in need of fostering, the goal being for both parties to walk away from the experience with a new perspective. Zabuza thought it would be an easy gig, just spend 500 hours with some random kid, and then he's home free.

There are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargain, depression, and acceptance.
In some ways, it made sense that Kabru went over those stages when he started to acknowledge his attraction to Laios, it was, after all, the death of his dignity and self respect.
