Zhou Zishu’s heart expanded too much with emotion for this man in his arms. He felt regret for losing him when they were young; he felt fury for the dead ghosts who had abused him; he felt sympathy for everything Wen Kexing had gone through and mostly, mostly, he felt deep abiding, once-in-the-lifetime love for this man. He knew he would never feel like this to anyone ever again and if Wen Kexing were to leave this world first, he would do what the Four Sages of Anji did.
He would follow him without a moment of hesitation.

An attack leaves Wen Kexing temporarily without his sight and dependent on Zhou Zishu's care. Neither of them takes easily to vulnerability. They find a way through.

“Be still!”
Wen Kexing’s breath hitches, his shoulders twitching. “Aiya, it hurts, A-Xu…”
“Good.” Anger (fear) makes his words sharp. “Maybe it’ll teach you not to do something so stupid in future.”
Wen Kexing flinches again and Zhou Zishu tightens his grip on his shoulder, holding him still as he carefully works the metal dart loose. It comes away with a slight jerk and a stifled gasp from Wen Kexing. Blood wells from the wound, a swelling bead that immediately bursts and trickles down Wen Kexing’s back. Zhou Zishu drops the dart into a bowl, metal clinking delicately against ceramic, and presses a cloth firmly to the wound, applying pressure, and a little push of qi, to slow the bleeding.

“You know what, Fang? You’re right, I am making a big deal out of nothing. Perhaps, I cared too much—all I wanted was for you to at least lean on me when things get tough, but it was clear you didn’t need that.” There was a defeated laugh that followed.
The discernible hurt lacing Tan’s laugh rang in Fang’s ears, and Fang’s heart was screaming to his brain to say something—anything that could convince Tan that he was getting it all wrong. But all that came out was a soft, fractured, ‘Tan’.
(Or, Tan just wanted Fang to ravel in him—but Fang was scared it would only drive Tan away.)
