Summary
The nightmares were bearable. Really. If this was the punishment he got for letting his people die, for failing them, for being selfish, then he would happily carry that weight. It was the smallest price to pay for their sacrifice.
He knew he deserved them.
Or: Ling gets slightly more injured than in canon during the Promised Day and winds up in the hospital with the Elrics and the rest of Colonel Mustang's team--while dealing with survivor's guilt, PTSD, and years of pressure to become the ruler of an entire empire.
Now, I don't know about you guys, but that's not great for a teenager's psyche.
Enter Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye, determined to be this kid's support for as long as he needs it (and oh boy, does he need it).

“Where is he?” Envy demanded furiously, unsure who they were asking after. The clarification— Scar or Marcoh —didn’t seem important to Envy, and Mustang didn’t seem to need it, either, as the answers were one and the same.
“Long gone,” he said, with another huff of laughter.
Envy wasted no time before grabbing a fistful of his hair and slamming his head into the wall. It didn’t knock Mustang out, but it was a close thing. The alchemist’s expression twisted with pain, but he was still stubbornly smiling.
“You will wish,” Envy spat, “that you had gone with them.”
Or the one where our heroes persist despite seemingly impossible odds, and begin to set some things in motion. In for a penny, in for a pound. Unfortunately, the villains have a new player of their own.
