Once, when he was young, Mama Barnes made sugar candy for Christmas. It was just sugar and water boiled together, spread thin like glass and cracked into shards of clear sweetness that she poured into his hands before Bucky trotted him home. It cut like glass, when he squeezed his hands tight around hit, and he licked bloody candy until the taste of copped faded and left only sharp sugar in it’s wake, blade bright on his tongue.
Tony’s tone reminds him of that candy now. So sweet it’s almost possible to ignore the blade’s spike.
