    Summary

It is a beautiful evening the day they lay Jean Moreau to rest. It’s the exact kind of sunset that he loves—loved—more than any other, all pinks and oranges streaking across the southern California sky, painting the sea a wine dark purple and all of their faces a warm, glowing gold.

    Summary

    They give Andrew three days.

Three days to decide if blood means anything.
Three days to take in a kid who doesn’t speak, doesn’t eat, doesn’t look at people like they’re real.
A kid with his name. A kid with his eyes.

Aaron’s already unraveling. Nicky’s asking too many questions. Neil’s not saying anything at all.

Andrew tells himself it’s not his problem.
He’s said that before. About his brother. About his team. About everything.

But the thing about lies is how fast they start to sound like truth.
And the thing about August is he never asked to be here.
    He just is.

“I want to see him,” Andrew decides.

“They won’t let you,” Wymack tells him.

Andrew grits out, “They don’t get to decide that.”

Wymack’s eyes never stop searching him. “They do.”

Andrew can’t look at anything. He sounds awfully, condemningly and absolutely indifferent. “They don’t get to decide he’s dead.”

    “They did,” Wymack says.

A hospital has never been so fucking quiet.

Or Neil dies in Baltimore but doesn’t quite leave. This a look into the complexity of Andrew’s trauma, grief, and psychosis that manifests itself as the undying ghost of Neil Josten. Reality and sanity are fragile concepts that Andrew isn’t too concerned about anymore; not if it means never letting Neil go, again and again and again. He made a promise, after all.
