He couldn't shake the tightness in his chest. He hadn't experienced these types of sleepless nights since coming back from Afghanistan. Each long close of his eyes was the same flash of images where Sherlocks body was hopelessly falling to the ground. Then all he could see was the pouring of blood, staining the concrete with the memories of what him and Sherlock were.

Summary
To say that living as a homosexual in the 1940s was a difficult thing to hide would be an understatement. Having feelings for a fellow soldier was an even trickier thing to hide, and to have that secret exposed to that very person was mortifying. “Yes. I, um…oh gosh. I feel a little nervous actually!” Anthony laughs shyly and takes another sip of wine.
“Don’t be,” James says immediately. “You can tell me anything.”
He wants to reach over and take Anthony’s hand; he wants to comfort and reassure him. But he doesn’t want to overwhelm Anthony, so he gives him his space.
Instead James tries to memorise everything about this moment, his heart in his mouth, as he’s almost certain this is about to be the happiest moment of his life. He takes in the colour of Anthony’s eyes in the dim light, the smell of the toad-in-the-hole, the sound of birds chirping their evening song outside, Anthony’s ridiculous Mickey Mouse t-shirt -
“Alright.” Anthony’s smile is soft. “I wanted to tell you that I’ve met someone.”
OR
Modern AU in which the Captain tries to confess his feelings to his best friend, only to discover that someone else has beaten him to it. Luckily he has a close group of colleagues at work who are very invested in his love life and want to help him get his happy ending…
