Will’s breath catches but he doesn’t move - the two singular taps might just be an accident, after all. It’s not like Mike’s ever had the chance to learn morse code. Not like Will did - with his drunk dad sitting at the table and the only open way of communicating with his mom being by small sounds left on the wood.

Will feels sick. He tries to tear his hand away, but Mike doesn’t let go - clearly determined to finish the sequence.

Their eyes finally connect, as Mike lets go of Will’s hand.
Will’s voice is faint and in contrast with white lights surrounding them, flickering lightly, as if in mockery. As if witnessing the end of it all.
"You know morse code?”

Mike and Will are on a mission in the Upside Down, when the lights start to flicker.

“Can I tell you a secret?”
Mike asks, when they finally lie down on the roof - the stars above them the only light of the apocalyptic night.
Will hums in response, his attention focus on the process of lighting his own joint.
“You’re pretty.”
Mike says with red eyes and smoke escaping his mouth in small puffs, as he breathes in the lit up drug.
“You can’t just say that.”
Will argues, when he manages to kick his body out of the frozen state. He’s still not turned to face Mike, his focus on keeping their bodies from touching.
“Okay.”
Mike’s voice is stable, when he turns his head, his arm reaching out to snake around Will’s waist and pull himself close to his best friend’s face.
“You are, though.”

Summary
It's been nearly ten years since they saw each other. Ten years since they lived in the same state, much less occupied the same room. Ten years since they were friends; eight and a half since Will stopped referring to Mike as such, much less his best one.
Ten years, and here Mike is, and here Will is, and here’s the guy in the chinos who just bought Will’s first friend, first love, first heartbreak a drink. The screaming is unusual.
