Summary

It’s strange. He went down hard, but nothing hurts. That might be very bad, if he can’t feel anything at all. But it’s not that. He can feel things, but they just don’t feel right. Maybe they already have him up on the stretcher, because he’s lying on something soft, not the cold ice he’d crumpled onto when he fell. He’s never felt a stretcher quite like this before, though.
“Ilya!”
There it is again. But now it’s louder. Almost unmistakably Shane.
Blinking against sunlight, Ilya opens his eyes, and stares up at the brilliant blue sky.

There are many reactions to being called such sweet things, but a wail is definitely not one of them. The sound Shane makes is unmistakably upset. A lamenting groan loud enough for the whole table to hear, a sound sober Shane would never make on pain of death.
“How is that the wrong answer?” Bood asks, bemused.
Or, Shane is jealous that he isn't Ilya's best friend (even though he is).

Summary
The research showed him that the foundations of a strong spine were in the controllable factors: appropriate core strength, flexibility, hip mobility. A strong diet, no smoking. Yoga in the morning, thirty minutes designed to mobilize and stabilize. These are the things that would keep him safe.
A fact is a fact is a fact, and Shane has lived his life largely following the idea that a fact, once proven, is immutable to change.
His facts do not account for the fact that, during a Centaurs game in February, he’s skating like a man possessed trying to score a last minute clincher against Tampa. They do not account for a D-man who delivers a fucking shit hit just a few inches too low, unable to check him cleanly and sending him into the boards. By the time his pelvis hits the board, there’s still time for his head to watch the puck fly to Luca before his shoulders make contact too, still facing forwards.
An injury puts Shane out of action - forcing him to reckon with the idea that, just maybe, his years of careful control have all come to naught.
