Pansy’s nose wrinkled with disgust—always so sweet and supportive. When he’d texted her about the assignment that morning, she’d immediately insisted they go for drinks so that he could tell her all the details and hopefully get drunk before being cooped up with Potter. “What on earth are you two meant to do for that long?”
“The usual. Check frequency readings and listen to the radio while trying not to strangle each other. And try not to blow my brains out from boredom, I suppose. Typical stakeout activities.”

Somehow, the early dawn felt more silent than the dead of night. More fragile. The fire had gone down, the room on her parchment taken up, and she was left with a horrible buzzing throughout her body. She curled up right there on the floor, back flush against the couch and face buried in her knees, rubbing the sting from her eyes. She just needed a moment to not look at anything.
Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps approaching, followed by a soft clink right in front of her. Her head shot up to find a steaming mug, right beside a stoppered potions bottle, neatly placed at the furthest corner of the table, safely away from the paper. And James, holding his own matching mug, smiling cautiously down at her.
