His first warning that something is very wrong is how quiet the house is.
“I’m home,” he calls, sitting down on their entryway bench with a groan and working his boots off. “Ellie?” He calls when he doesn’t get a response. Her boots are haphazardly discarded by the door as usual, so he knows she’s home, but she only rarely doesn’t come barreling down the stairs the moment the door opens, making his heart skip a beat each time with fear that she’s about to take a header in her excitement.
Even after the call, however, no Ellie appears.

“I could do it.”
Nat blinks. “What?”
“If you want to try a girl,” Lottie says. “If you would rather try with someone you know rather than a total stranger, I’ll do it.”

Nat snorts. “Right. Whatever, Matthews. Never going to happen.”
“Okay,” Lottie says, tilting her head to the side with an eerily all-knowing smile. “If you say so.”
Lottie gives Nat another blatantly obvious once-over before turning on her heel and walking away, stupid tiny skirt swishing around her thighs, and Nat is reminded all over again of the fact that Lottie Matthews, in addition to being a frat girl and the most obnoxious person alive, is also on the University of Wiskayok’s soccer team, and the proof is right there in front of her.

Nat nods, tongue poking out between her teeth as she types. “Lottie Matthews, huh?”
Lottie nods. “Engagement and wedding photographer.”
“I gathered.”

Nat lifts a shoulder. “Don’t apologize. I’m Natalie. Scatorccio.”
Lottie holds out her hand instinctively, and Natalie, for some reason, takes it and shakes.

Lottie ignores her. “But obviously she told Jackie and now Jackie is insisting I bring this girlfriend to the wedding.”
“This girlfriend that you don’t have,” Nat points out, like Lottie isn’t already entirely fucking aware. “What are you gonna do?”
“Well." Lottie clears her throat awkwardly. "Here’s the thing. Van seemed to be under the impression that the someone I was seeing was you,” she says, wincing when Nat frowns. “And I kind of...didn’t correct her?”
