The implications of the name caught up with him. “Good grief,” he said, which made Marty laugh harder. “You actually like this?”
Still smiling, Marty nudged his arm. “You like it in the future.”

His other self claps a hand, hard, over his mouth. His palm is damp. Clammy. Emmett makes a protesting sound against it but before he can wriggle free, the other him speaks.
“Marty dies.”
A cloud passes over the sun.
The Brown family are on vacation, taking a break from the stresses of 1986. It's a beautiful summer day. What could possibly go wrong?

The introduction wasn’t necessary. Emmett knew those eyes. It was profoundly strange to see them on an infant and he thought, I shouldn’t have come.

“Yeah, you can go ahead and read the statement now,” said a voice off screen.
“What the shit,” Marty said, softly, as his on-screen self fiddled with his cue cards. “What the shit.”
“Okay.” The video played on. “Here we go. My name is Marty M. I’m making this video roughly two hours before it’ll be shown to, uh, me –”
“What the hell is this?” said Marty to Strickland. “What did you do to me?”
Doctor Emmett B has worked on Lumon's severed basement floor for the best part of twenty years. His work is diverting; his colleagues are pleasant. He is, for for it's worth, content. But his fragile peace is shattered when Lumon decide to assign him an assistant - 18-year-old newly severed Marty M, stubborn, furiously angry, and desperate to escape...

Marty is struck silent. There’s a part of him that is already beginning to fracture inside, that has taken Doc’s rejection to heart, but another, much louder part that refuses to go down without a fight.
