Dutch never beat him though, he used his words. Took the trust and loyalty he gained from Arthur and twisted it, tying it into a leash to pull whenever he believed his loyal dog was starting to question the hand that fed him. Though lately, it seemed like Dutch was tying it into something more akin to a noose.

Thorin sighs and his hand finally pulls away from Bilbo’s hair.Bilbo stares at his face and only just manages not to whine at the loss of warmth. (“It was the injury talking. Not me” he tells himself) close. Too close.
Then the words register and the hobbit sputters because how dare Thorin act as if Bilbo was being unreasonable.
“You left me.” The face Thorin makes is almost effective enough to make Bilbo cower.
“You left, Bilbo. In the dead of night. For food.”
“I was hungry.” Bilbo does what he never thought he’d be able to without thinking of his father’s disappointed eyebrow— he grumbles.
“I would’ve come if you had asked.” Thorin answers gruffly. This time he actually sounds offended. Thorin Oakenshield. Offended because Bilbo did not allow him to partake in a side quest for midnight snacks.

Summary
Vader is surrounded by enemies. Disoriented, crushed by the vastness of himself, Vader casts out his consciousness for a foothold in the Force and finds nothing. Panic, icy cold, rushes through him, fear fueling his power, the first tenet of the dark side. Fear is the greatest motivator, only if it can be properly directed. In a different life, his fear was directionless, omnipresent, and useless. He had drowned in rivers of fear during his adolescence and was reborn learning to use it. If he cannot feel the Force, he is in danger; something is wrong, and this fear gives him enough power to once again sense his surroundings.

“The offer?” Dutch tried to remain as collected as he could, swallowing as he attempted to seem more nonchalant. Still, he found himself pivoting slowly to face Hosea.
Hosea smiled and shrugged, “You’re wound tight, Mr. Van der Linde…” he trailed off, eyes sparkling, “I could help you unwind.”
