The apartment is so muted, so quiet, not even the whine of a buzzing light, only the sound of their breathing and the soft noises of the comb working through Suguru’s hair. Satoru can’t remember the last time they had a quiet moment together. Three months ago? Five?
“It’s not worth the trouble,” Suguru says, not talking about his hair.

“When dead whales sink down to the sea floor, they become a whole”—Grace waves his hands in a big circle and draws out the word to emphasise his point—“ecosystem for a tonne of bottom dwelling creatures down there.
“To them, it’s the equivalent of an oasis falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a desert. It can feed them for decades, and gosh, the microbes that can be found there. I would love to study a whale fall...if they weren't at the bottom of the ocean. Eugh.” He shudders dramatically. “If I never have to go in a submarine, I will die happy.”
Eva wonders if the whale died happy. Or, at least, happy to know its death would bring life to so many. Surely that was a comfort when faced with the end.
