“Thank you,” she says softly. She turns to meet his eyes, trying to make him understand that she means thank you for all of it. For putting so much on the line to keep her safe, knowing the pain it was going to cause. For visiting her in the hospital every moment he could, sitting in the quiet with her when neither of them knew what to say. For never asking her what the hell she was thinking going after Doyle alone with flashbang grenades and automatic weapons while the team tried to build a profile she already knew by heart.
“It’s alright,” he says. “Just let me drive you to the hotel, and promise me you’ll call tomorrow.”
Something squeezes tight in her chest when she realises he’s honestly worried this will be the last he sees of her. Tighter, when she realises it’s something she could do – she could run. She has a bag full of cash and two other identities that are still clean. Her heart races briefly with the possibility. It would be so easy compared to this mess.
“Emily,” he says. “Promise me.”

He leaned forward so that his forehead slumped against the bathroom mirror and simply tried to breathe. With his eyes closed to block out everything else, he focused on his lungs. He winced and rubbed at his chest. It felt like a shard of glass had been lodged deep into the middle bone, making every breath he took since receiving that fateful phone call pure agony. She's okay. Everything is okay. He repeated over and over in his head. He wasn't sure how long he stayed pressed up against that mirror. All he knew was that he needed to get back to his family. He took deep centering breaths, then pat dried his face.
