The cottage looked unassuming and quaint, with a wooden ramp up to the front porch and rose bushes beneath the windows. A little sign was nailed above the door, reading The Foxhole. It seemed peaceful. Quiet
Its patrons, however, were neither of those things. Neil could already hear the raucous lot from where he was stood outside the door. Having never spoken to anyone outside of rare, whispered words to his uncle, or his cat, or his mother's grave, Neil knew this would be interesting.
A blond woman opened the door with a smile and glittering eyes. Neil's stomach rolled over itself. He hoped this wasn't a dumb decision.

“Aw, Neil!” Nicky said, “You’ve done it again!”
“What?”
“Your nails, good Lord!” Nicky cried, he reached out and Neil let him take his hands, fussing over the bleeding cuticles and ragged, bitten nails. “You gotta stop! You can get infections!”
Nicky cleared their plates away, chattering absently and Andrew stood to help. He paused before he passed Neil and leaned his hip against the table, jarring it enough to draw Neil’s eyes.
“I’ll give you a goddamn manicure, yes or no.”

“Don’t waste my time. When I break your curse don’t kill yourself in the process.”
Neil leans forward. Andrew fights the urge to back away in order to maintain the distance between them. This close, the murky brown of Neil’s eyes eddies and swirls like bathwater down a drain. This close, and he looks almost distant. Andrew wonders if he meant to lean forward at all, or if he’s listing from weakness.
“When,” Neil repeats, his mouth curling about the word like a secret.
Andrew jabs a finger hard into his chest. “Don’t make it if.”
(The one where Andrew's a cursebreaker, Neil gets cursed, and nothing is as easy as it should be.)
