For the Incubators, a diagnosis of "mental illness" is as simple as having a personal interest outside producing negentropy – for example, in wordplay. Kyubey, the assigned Incubator for Mitakihara City's magical girls in their fight against wraiths, is diagnosed with an unnecessary emotion after making an unprompted joke, and scheduled for execution and replacement. It accepts gracefully, knowing its death serves the purpose of fighting entropy... right up until it can't.
In for a penny, in for breaking and rewriting your identity, as they say.

disclaimer: i'm mutuals with this fic's author on another website so my opinion may be biased
but the combination of
- the worldbuilding
- the precise construction of an Increasingly Incredible Situation, and
- "miss kyubey"'s third person subjective narration, through a series of fully believable steps, slowly tilting off the plumb-line and into the waiting hands of "neoteny, flowers, and lace"
has been an incredible experience so far and promises to only get better as things proceed
p.s. i didn't realize pmmm needed a wakaba but now that nomura-chan is here i feel like i could take a fictional bullet for her

The framing device of Umineko almost dares its readers to write their own "forgeries" – fanfic of an apocryphal version of the Rokkenjima Massacre.
But very few completed fan-forgeries exist. How many authors have something complicated enough to say about Umineko, that they're willing to go through the trouble? 150,000 words – the amount usually necessary to complete an Umineko gameboard – is no small mountain to climb.
This author did have something to say, and, over the course of Wanderlust, brilliantly articulated it.

I listened to CDs of the old Shadow radio dramas when I was a kid, complete with Blue Coal commercials. And while I haven't read Worm itself – I tend to run out of patience for "conga line of unfair disasters" stories fairly quickly – I'll admit to indulging in fanfic of it now and again.
As Worm fanfic goes? This particular specimen continues to delight. The premise may be Taylor using her trademark power to implement the Shadow's playbook, but the execution sets aside the apocalyptic stakes of the source material, in exchange for battles of wits between our heroine and renditions of Brockton Bay's bad actors which take as a given that they're competent. The most interesting example of this is Lung, transformed – via a creative but entirely plausible tweak of how he's learned to use his powers – from a first-season brute into a credible "final boss" for Orb Weaver's crusade against the stench of evil in Brockton Bay.
(I used to follow this story on a forum. The author has since quit that website, proving once again the value of AO3 as a "fic archive of last resort".)

The ending can't be changed... or can it? What if I could show you a devil's proof, a tale built out of the darkness beyond the sight of the surviving witnesses? What if I show you a story that contradicts nothing in the Single Truth of Eva's diary or the end of Episode 8, but that adds on to the story you know? What if I wove you an illusion that begs you to accept a different truth? Can it convince you? A miracle will happen if we all believe.
A servant girl with secrets is about to commit a crime on Rokkenjima.

The stream-of-consciousness style of the prose might be a little hard to follow... but that's a small price to pay. This fic is a beautifully, brilliantly executed heist, weaving through red and black truth like an acrobat through a laser hallway.
Instead of using the dark arts of Purgatorio's twisted logic to deny Beatrice or to frame some new suspect for the Rokkenjima Massacre, the game master has skillfully employed it as a skeleton key to smuggle something precious out of what we thought was a closed room.
The witch shall praise the wise.

"Protagonist from our world, dropped into a fictional setting with an outside context advantage" is a tale as old as time in fanfic. Some see it as lowbrow. That's their prerogative. Personally, I don't bother to rate fanfic by how high its brows are; we're all hobbyists writing/reading for fun anyway, aren't we?
This particular example, I've enjoyed for the worldbuilding and intrigue. And, yes, for the junk-food thrill of watching the main character do cool shit. Maybe you'll enjoy it too!

I am consistently... undersatisfied by canon's exploration of Seven of Nine's unique situation. Unlike Data and his deliberate, self-directed quest to understand and internalize a human nature, I couldn't help but feel as though Janeway's approach to helping Seven adjust to post-Collective life, on some level, begged the question by conflating "Seven as an individual" with "Seven as a human".
After all... by the time Seven joined the Voyager crew, she may have been biologically human, but her cultural background was not that of Earth culture, but rather, the values and worldview and way of the Borg. A deeply poisonous society, yes. But every emigrant from a society carries with them parts of their native culture that they still see as valuable. Seven showed that, even in canon.I appreciated the opportunity to see those parallels explored more deeply in this story.
