Summary
Shane does not know what he will do if Ilya is dead, but he knows that what he will not be is alive anymore. He will sit in the back of a too-grand funeral like an uninvited spectre, and the Centaurs’ surviving family will say why the fuck is Shane Hollander here? Someone will say oh, they had that charity together and a couple of people will nod, and that will be that. Meanwhile, Shane will watch as a coffin bearing the name of the most beautiful man in the world is lowered into the ground. Shane is not a man who will want consolation, but it feels like a violation that no one will ask him how he is.

His mom fills him in, standing with hunched shoulders in a cramped, too-bright hallway at The Ottawa Hospital. An illegal check into the boards; they were worried about a head injury, because Ilya wasn’t moving and he’s usually so, so hard to take down like that. But then his heart stopped, and they had to CPR right there on the ice to bring it back. To bring him back.
Shane buckles, crouching against the wall with his head in his hands. His mom’s voice is fuzzy above him, her hair tickling his shoulder when she leans down to comfort him. Ilya’s heart fucking stopped. On the ice, in the middle of a game, he died.
Or: Ilya goes into a coma after an accident on the ice. Shane figures out how to build him a life worth waking up for.
