They are in sync without every trying to be—Ben reaches out a hand behind his back to grab Rey’s dish before she even makes it to the pass; she looks over to find another cooler full of ahi mysteriously sitting at her station just as she’s run out; she yanks on his chef’s coat at the last second and pulls him out of swinging distance of Finn’s piping hot cast iron skillet. It’s a dance they’ve never rehearsed but somehow know step-for-step, the music of sizzling meat and honing knives and pulsing food processors keeping them in rhythm.

“Where am I?” The question comes out with a snarl. “Who are you?”
The other woman tilts her head slightly to the side, and there is something about her pose, something about her eyes, that-
“I think,” she says calmly, hands folded in front of her, “that I might be your mother-in-law.”
(In which Rey leaves Jakku, and does so very much against her will.)

She picks one up, turning it over in her fingers. Two days worth of polystarch bread, near-tasteless and and faintly gritty between the teeth. Ben had eaten some, early in their courtship, and though he had never complained he had also been hard-pressed to conceal the rather stunned look he wore after the first bite. She hadn’t understood why until he brought her actual bread, still warm from his galley with curls of butter melting into each slice.
Rey hadn’t cried, that day. She’d eaten the offering in small mouthfuls, useless and futile frustration simmering in her belly, and then she had gone outside and hurled handfuls of sand into the desert night with shuddering screams until she was too limp to cast even a single grain more.
And Ben had stayed. He had stayed, and hugged her tight as she sucked in heaving breaths, and murmured “I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” into her ear, though even now she is not sure if he was apologizing for his gift or for spoiling her ignorance or for casting her circumstances into such sharp, sharp relief withkarking bread.

Rey’s body temperature indeed rose several degrees from his proximity. Ben’s hair smelled like wood smoke, a smudge of electric orange cheese powder on his shirt only visible at close range. Ink was soaked into the callous on his finger, like he’d been practicing his calligraphy again.
She closed her eyes, feeling the shape of him against her. He was trusting her as a friend to respond as a friend, and that left no room for her hormonal responses, she told herself. What she had taken to be a lack of interest in romance had turned out to be a lack of Ben. Her body and her heart thrummed quietly against him, soaking him in.

"I know how to put things inside, Jill." His voice felt raw, needy, decisively desperate. He let his hand slip around to gently grasp the plain of her neck again, not pressuring, but still fully encircling the column of her throat. He hummed lightly and directed her to kiss him again, letting his tongue explore her mouth languidly and his eyes slip shut in heady arousal. He could feel her trembling breath on his cheek and a graphic moan cut softly through the air about them.

Summary
And, perhaps, his selfless nature was exactly what had gotten him into this predicament.
Joshua, as someone of his stature, had many titles: Dominant of the Phoenix, Keeper of the Flames, former heir to the ducal throne of Rosaria… Idol of the Undying. And while they were all titles he’d never been particularly fond of, always ever ones to place an inexplicable amount of expectation on him that he wished he would do without—he knew. He knew that were he to humor them for even a moment, perhaps he could get away with most anything he desired to.
…But he had never been that sort of person.
No matter if his titles and his position were the only things keeping him from what he’d truly wanted; Joshua could never dream of jeopardizing another in favor of his own selfish desires.
...Could he?
“And you stood there in front of me, just close enough to touch; close enough to hope you couldn’t see what I was thinking of.”
Or; Joshua deals with the repercussions of the proximity effect.

Because she would never refuse him, and he could never, ever, ever take advantage of that.

"So, what's the plan?" Noctis asked, even though what he didn't know he could extrapolate from experience. But he found it comforting to hear Prompto and Gladio argue over who was the better driver, and a bit terrifying to hear Ignis' dark satisfaction at having finally found a source for coffee (No way, Gladio snapped at him. I remember you in withdrawal. I'm not going through that again.). Gladio wanted to know if Noctis was going swimming, and... Well. He wasn't sure he wouldn't sink like a stone. Ignis told Prompto to add water wings to the shopping list, and even though Noctis grumbled (he had to protest, for form's sake) it felt good to be laughed at. Familiar. Like he was with family.
