Summary
Scully sat down on the couch with her legs curled up under her, and Mulder was wondering if he should stay with her, or if she just wanted him to drop her off and leave. But then he saw her lip tremble, and suddenly nothing else mattered but holding her. He sat next to her and hugged her so that her head rested on her chest. She wasn’t crying, but her breath was shaky, and he knew she was holding back tears. That was Scully: near death yet again, but refusing to let her walls down. Unwilling — or perhaps unable — to let him in, let him comfort her.
The hurt/comfort scene we deserved post-Milagro.

(Never mind, of course, that she can hear his solitary activities through the thin walls afterward...)
It’s really just a professional expression on his face. Analytical, really. An examination. They need to learn each other’s bodies, of course, to understand each other’s abilities. The last thing they would need would be to misjudge the other’s strength and be stranded in the midst of a fight.
So she lets him evaluate her, just as she’ll evaluate him when it’s her turn.
Then she turns her back again. She feels him close the gap and sink down to check the backs of her legs.
This time he keeps his hands to himself. Perhaps it would, in fact, be unprofessional for him to run his hands over her calves, to let his fingertips ghost up her inner thighs, to…
