Summary
Top prospect, and his only real competition for the number one draft pick, Shane Hollander, declares no plan to professionally pursue hockey. It shouldn’t matter to Ilya. If anything, it makes his life easier. He’s selected first overall and moves to Boston, determined to build a life for himself in America, away from his father, away from a place that makes him feel cursed.
When, by pure coincidence, Shane Hollander ends up in Boston too, playing for a university team, Ilya can’t resist wanting to be close to him. Shane is earnest, shiny, lucky, blessed. Maybe, divinely placed too.

Summary
They’d had an argument once, on the bus to Toronto. After they’d both showered, Shane had informed him, in a clipped tone, that he’d booked a separate hotel room, and that the space a night before a game might be what’s best for the team. Ilya, equally mad about something he can’t even remember now, had agreed.
Shane had ended up at his door again twenty minutes later, with his mouth curled into a snarl, eyes glassy. “Were you really going to just let me go?”

Summary
Shane says he likes the kind of quiet it gets in a tent up north. It’s different from the cottage, Shane explains. Here it’s kind of like being underwater, but up there it feels like sticking your head into a cloud. He gets embarrassed. I don’t know. Shane and his preferred types of quiet. God, Ilya could just eat him alive.
Shane takes Ilya on a morning hike.
