Summary
Within a moment’s notice, the forest’s canopy opens wide into a stretch of blue sky, the only presence punctuating it being green grass and the occasional piece of rubble. Grass sways gently under the wind’s guidance, and it paints the world in a serene silence uninterrupted.
Despite his wish to admire the beauty of it all, Sonic continues steadily forward. He is forced to a standstill when a piece of debris comes soaring through the air toward him. Skidding once more over the grass, he leaps out of the way as the rubble flies past. Too close for his liking... What could have done that?
“Halt!” comes a familiar voice. “Advance no further!”
Just his luck, Sonic reckons, as he gets back to his feet. He’s asking the wrong questions, it seems. Not what, but who.

"This feeling that all my thoughts and memories… that they’re not mine, that they’ve been put into my head by somebody else… does it ever go away?”
It comes out almost pleadingly, the desperation Gustave tried to suppress for months now bleeding into his voice.
Something softens in Verso’s expression.
Or: the Maelle ending. Coming to terms with being brought back and repainted. Gustave is looking for some answers, so he goes to the one person who can provide them. Verso is absolutely done with this life, but feels obligated to at least talk to him.
They find that being a copy of a dead man is less unbearable when you're not alone.

Now if only Verso bloody Dessendre would stop accidentally falling asleep on his furniture…

“Glad to see you back among the living,” Phainon says through a yawn, clearly having spent the night in the uncomfortable chair in the infirmary by Mydei’s side. Like he often does.
Mydei’s head hurts. Just the regular kind of pain, easily managed by ignoring it until it goes away. But what makes it worse, is the confusion at his predicament. The memories returning to him in death used to vary in time and people who appeared in them. Why is it always Phainon nowadays?
“Fuck you,” Mydei says, hoarsely. He feels like he is losing his mind.
Phainon’s mouth locks mid-yawn and he blinks down at him stupidly, tilting his head with confusion. It’s probably fair, he hasn’t even done anything to earn Mydei’s ire as of late.
or; Human brain lives for a few more minutes after dying, replaying the most cherished memories. Mydei starts seeing Phainon after each of his deaths.
