The look on Naim's face right now is one Ryan’s seen a thousand times, from his father before pulling off his belt, in Hunter's eyes as he picked up a stone. Ryan’s going to get hit and he deserves it. Naim can even the playing field with one, well timed punch. Ryan deserves it for going off the rails, for covering their doorway in blood, for not being able to shut the fuck up right now. Just one hit.
Naim doesn’t. His eyes fill with tears and he retreats without another word.
The weight of the world is on Ryan’s shoulders: to protect Naim, to work, to house them. Naim’s 18th birthday heralds in some well needed respite.
