Summary
Life in the West is hard to get through unscathed. Loyalty, freedom, duty, sacrifice, love, and blood run deep through the land, and everybody’s got a stake in the game. Everybody’s got a story too, and it’s where those stories intertwine that things get interesting.
Butch Merrill is at the end of his rope. His broken leg is healed, but he’s a long way from back on his feet. He figures he’s got one more shot: a bounty. Specifically, the bounty on Jack ‘The Ace’ MacAllen’s head. It doesn’t go as he hoped, but he thinks he’s okay with that. He’s starting over, and for the first time in his life, everything feels right.
Jack MacAllen is not a good man. He’s been running with the Montgomery gang since he was a boy, and despite their values, things happen and people get hurt. Then Butch Merrill, a down-on-his-luck man with his heart on his sleeve, tries to cash in on his bounty, and he learns there might just be more to life than he ever thought possible.

A cool sort of efficiency settles over him. Dean’s not coming back, so Sam has to get up and eat breakfast and go for his run and not think about Eileen or Cas or Jack. He has to get on his laptop and look for cases and not call Jody and the girls. Sam asked for peace and he got it.
He’s inclined to think that it can go straight to hell.
