Richie just looks kind of sad, and tells him to stay awake while he runs off shouting, and Eddie thinks I don’t think I’m going to make it that long, but he doesn’t have the strength to shout. He just watches Richie until he can’t see him anymore, and he quietly wishes maybe he’d said something different after all.
And then there’s just darkness.
He wakes up, startled, in the Town House, with his face in his hands and his elbows on his knees.

There's something familiar about Richie, though Eddie knows they've never met. While Richie insists on sitting in the front seat and making something more than small talk, Eddie struggles to maintain professional distance.
Basically - what if Eddie and Richie did forget, and didn't see each other for 25 years, but they fell in love anyways.

This is basically just one big chapter 2 spoiler because it follows many of the major plot points of the film from Eddie's perspective - if you haven't seen the movie there's no way this will make sense.

It’s not exactly like repression, what the fucking town and that monster does to his head, but that’s what his shrink always said it probably was, so it probably works something like repression. Does it hurt more or less to think that Eddie repressed it? It’s hard to decide.
