Summary
“I’m not in love with you,” Buck blurts out as soon as the ringing stops on the other end of the phone.
There’s dead air on the other end of the line, but the kind that’s filled with background noise - a distant hum, some breathing sounds, just enough for Buck to know that Eddie heard him.
buck finally calls eddie. he's still working through some stuff. he's kind of a disaster, honestly.

Summary
The day that Ted leaves London, Trent lies down on his floor for a full hour and mentally lists to himself every single reason he absolutely cannot go to the airport and make a fool of himself. Mostly it’s because that is exactly what he’d be doing - he would just be making a fool of himself.
There’s never been one single concrete indication that Ted is anything other than straight. Trent’s basically never even seen him outside of work with the exception of team events or post-match conversations. They text occasionally, and Trent would consider them friends only because he’s certain Ted would be offended if he didn’t - but they aren’t close. Trent has fallen stupidly, lethally, madly in love with him completely from afar.
or - trent tries to cope with ted leaving, accidentally befriends roy kent, figures out why ted cut off everyone at richmond, and accidentally builds some bridges - and maybe gets some more personal benefits out of it as well. eventually.

That’s when he sees it for the first time. It’s big. It’d be pretty fucking hard not to see it. It is, actually, the biggest pair of initials on the fence.

Summary
It’s something about the way Eddie phrases it. Something about the combination of his words and the way he’s staring down at the floor, and the flush in his cheeks and the way he’s fidgeting. Buck thinks, abruptly, he’s going to ask me on a date.
“Well I - wanted to tell you first, and I need someone to watch Chris, anyways - I know he’s getting old enough now he doesn’t like feeling like he’s got a babysitter, so I was hoping - sorry. Not the point. Uh. I have a date on Saturday.”
Just as abruptly as his own hopes had come soaring up above the cloud cover of his own unawareness - they go crashing back down to the floor - to the basement, and into the mud. “A date?” Buck rasps out.
or - the one where eddie decides to start dating again, buck figures out his own feelings just a minute too late, and then he spends a week going through the five stages of grief

Summary
Now, though, Buck is sitting at the table, looking up at him with the barest hint of tears glistening in his eyes, and Eddie can’t take it anymore. He puts away Christopher’s lunch box, trying to give Buck a moment to himself, and then moves around the table to put his hands on Buck’s shoulders. He just - rests them there, his fingers following the line of Buck’s collar bone, thumbs pressing gently into the muscles in his shoulders. Eddie squeezes, just once, and Buck lets out a little hum of a sound.

Summary
It takes Buck longer than it should to notice. Which - okay, sure, he’s oblivious about certain things even on the best of days, and he got struck by lightning less than a month ago, so maybe he should give himself a break. But still, it feels like something he should have noticed, so he ends up feeling pretty stupid for not noticing.
Since Buck woke up in the hospital, Eddie’s stopped touching him.
or - the one where eddie won't touch buck once he wakes up in the hospital, and buck goes absolutely bonkers bananas about it

Summary
It’s a new arrangement, and one they haven’t actually talked about out loud. Obviously Buck couldn’t sleep on the couch right now - and Buck couldn’t seem to stand the idea of Eddie doing it either, so sharing the bed had been the unspoken compromise.
Buck hasn’t really said much about it, but it’s starting to become clear that he had some kind of dream in the coma that he hasn’t managed to shake off completely. Every time he wakes up now, Eddie can see the way his eyes seek out whoever else is in the room, the way they look for familiar landmarks that he can use to ground himself.
When Buck gets home from the hospital, he stays with the Diazes - and stays in Eddie's bed. Maybe Eddie isn't the only one getting comfort from it.

Summary
He swallows, and the dry click of his throat sounds loud in the otherwise peaceful room. He can still hear White breathing beside him, knows he’s not asleep. Not yet. “I gotta tell you something, man. And you - I guess if you fucking kill me-”
“Jesus, kid, that’s a hell of a way to start.”
Between falling for White and catching a glimpse at a life where people might not give a shit about the fact that he's queer, Freddy realizes being a cop is kind of a raw deal. Just in time, he decides to tell Larry the truth. As a result, things eventually go down a little differently.

Summary
Romance is a lot easier to write about than it is to put into practice, and Eddie is the world’s most ridiculous living example of that. He can practically hear the kind of jokes that Shannon would make about it, if he ever told her about the books but - he didn’t. And somehow, probably just because he didn’t start writing until after they weren’t living together anymore, she never found out.
There’s actually only a handful of people in the world who know that Eddie is a writer - and more specifically, that he’s E. Diaz, one of the bestselling romance authors on the market.
or - the one where everything in canon is the same, except eddie diaz is secretly a bestselling romance author, and nobody knows. Yet.

Summary
Eddie comforts Buck after a nightmare - only it's less like the nightmares Buck is used to, and more like a stress dream. Thankfully, just like always, Eddie seems to know exactly what Buck needs without Buck even being able to say that he needs it.

He presses his thumb right against Buck’s pulse, feels it under his fingers, and exhales, slowly.
“Your nightmare…” Buck says quietly.
“Was about you,” Eddie confirms, looking down at Buck’s hand, instead of his eyes. “It happens, sometimes.”

Summary
All at once, Eddie has an idea. It’s definitely the stupidest idea he’s ever had in his entire life, but he has it all the same, and there’s no time to come up with a better one. He puts his hands on Buck’s elbows, tugs him in closer, and says, “Kiss me.”
Based on combining the prompts "kiss me like you mean it” and “i don’t know what i would have done if you weren’t here”

Summary
The first night that Christopher is away at summer camp, Eddie shows up at Buck’s door with a bottle of tequila and a bag full of limes and says, “You wanna get drunk?”
Except - Eddie almost never gets drunk. So Buck is pretty interested to find out why he suddenly wants to, but also - what to expect from a drunk Eddie. (The answer is so much open affection that Buck can hardly take it.)
For Buck Week 2022, and the prompt, “I don’t think that’s exactly what I said.”

Summary
Buck is the incredibly kind but incredibly straight bartender at Eddie's local gay bar. Eddie is trying very, very hard not to be pathetically in love with him, and is failing miserably.
“Hey, you’re back,” Buck had said, greeting him with that sun-bright grin, and Eddie had yet again been reminded why he’d started questioning his sexuality.
“Well, I get one night off a week. And tonight I could really use the drink.”
Buck’s brow had furrowed, and he got Eddie his favorite beer without even asking again what it was. “You need to talk about it? Assuming I read you right and you’re the kind of guy who talks to a bartender instead of a therapist.”
Eddie had winced theatrically. “Ouch. That obvious, huh?”
“Hey, man, you’re the one that told me you started coming here on your coworker’s advice. Feels like something you’d get from a therapist, if you had one.”

Summary
As it turns out, Buck is standing on the porch, holding his phone over his head. He’s obviously drunk, pink in the face, his overshirt tied around his waist. His eyes are closed for a second, but when he blinks them open, they look a little glassy.
Eddie blinks a few times, like that’s going to make what he’s seeing make sense, but nothing else suddenly appears to give him context. He does realize that he recognizes the song, though, and it’s - it’s Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.”
