Summary
Leon, she always thinks, is perpetually bracing, every muscle in him pulled together by an emergency stitch that’s supposed to hold the wound of his entire body shut. Every frown line, every scar wrapping around the contours of his bones is a silent demarcation of pain.
She imagines the stitches of her own body unraveling, row by row, until she’s undone every suture inside her and realized that there’s nothing left — that this whole time, her body was just the aftermaths of the scars she suffered to invent herself, holding themselves together, and nothing more.

Summary
Layla hums as she continues to massage his scalp, and Jake faintly registers the tune as an Arabic pop song from the 60s that she'd mentioned her dad liking. In the mirror, Marc closes his eyes and listens contently as well.
Outside, the rain falls gently onto the streets of London. The storm is going into its second day now, and it's only just beginning to soften. He’d spent all of yesterday cursing the weather, but now that he’s indoors, resting on Layla’s lap and swathed in his own oversized clothes, Jake doesn’t mind the rain quite so much.

Summary
Jake crashes to the pavement, sending splashes of rainwater onto the road as his knees hit the ground, and then his hands crash down too, barely extended in time to catch his body as he slumps down like an abandoned puppet, suddenly cut from its strings. He presses his forehead into the tiled street and he is silent and silent and then he is sobbing, giving his whole body to the big wet ugly sob that claws its way out his throat and rattles his entire frame.
