After a long silence, Will spoke. “What are you reading?”
Mike hesitated, then tilted the book cover toward him. Hoping he wouldn’t ask too many questions, or ask him to read it too. With the big red dragon on the cover, he felt safe.
Will blinked, eyes widening slightly. “Oh.”
“What?”
“I… didn’t think it was your kind of book,” he admitted softly, voice low, shy.
“Fantasy books?” Mike asked, playing dumb.
Will hesitated, chewing the inside of his cheek, fingers twisting nervously in his lap. “Mike… do you know what you’re reading?”
Mike shook his head, pretending ignorance, though his fingers gripping the pillow gave him away.
“It’s… gay smut. From beginning to end,” Will said quietly, avoiding Mike’s eyes.
Mike’s ears went red. “You’ve read it?”
“Yeah,” Will admitted, shrugging, glancing down.
“Why?” Mike asked, clutching the pillow tighter.
Will shrugged again, probably not expecting the question. “It’s… good.”
_____Mike and Will were childhood best friends who drifted apart. Years later, they meet again in a mental health center and reconnect in unexpected ways.

And he’s Fine. Nightmares stalk his sleep, his chest aches with the life he left behind, the childhood that had never really felt like his. The boy back home with the freckles and the words left out in the rain. Will is Fine. And he’ll keep telling himself that until the dreams drag him under.
