“This one’s the best,” Ronan says after some time, holding the champion between them.
Gansey looks at him, pulling his thumb from his lip and letting his elbow fall from the window’s edge. He adjusts his wireframes on his nose and wrinkles his brow, squinting as he holds the bottle up to catch the dim street light.
“This one’s not even real juice,” he says, disapproving. “It’s high fructose corn syrup with less than 2% assorted fruit juices.”
Ronan shrugs. Gansey looks at him again. Ronan doesn’t look away. All the soft sounds suddenly feel like a lot of noise, joined by the drum of Ronan’s own beating heart.

He brings his mouth to the inside of Ronan’s thighs, over the freshly-blooming bruise Adam left there moments before. He lingers at the bones of Ronan's hips, comes up to kiss over the bite mark Adam left at Ronan’s shoulder.
“You’re okay?” Gansey asks him, quietly, leaning just above his face so he can watch Ronan’s eyes.
Ronan says, “Yeah, Gansey.”
The collar was around Ronan’s neck, not his own, but it was hard not to feel Ronan’s equal hold, the balance of give and take and service and submission they’d cultivated over time.

Years ago, he’d learned with Eddie that feeding revenants was to be avoided at all costs.
They’d huddled together under a blanket in the bed they’d shared most nights, trying viciously not to give the inky, dreadful shapes in the corner any fear or notice. When Andrew felt cold he’d clung to Eddie’s skin, which always ran warm, no matter what. That helped, back then. It was so stupid to ignore that primal and instinctual terror he’d nursed for years since.
But the only way to bring Eddie closer to him now was to feed his fear into the thing pressed against him, ice cold and murmuring, stroking, leaving half-burning welts along Andrew’s skin.

But Henry’s always been different than other people, and Gansey doesn’t know why he thought that kissing him would be at all the same. Kissing Henry is diving deep into a pool, being watched as he swims laps, holding his breath for as long as he can bear just to reassure himself that his lungs can burn with as much of a smoldering ache as anyone else’s.
