It hasn’t been long since the couple had fallen asleep, tightly nuzzled together, Wei Wuxian sprawled out on top of Lan Wangji’s chest.
Now he couldn’t feel his husband’s weight on him any longer. Groping around the bed, he found Wei Wuxian next to him on his back, rigid, staring at the ceiling unblinking. He must’ve rolled from his chest during the night. His breathing was staggered, panicked, like he was running away form something. Yet he didn’t move. He tried to speak, but his mouth wouldn’t open, only helpless sounds leaving his throat.

His eyes shoot open and he sees his husband standing before him. He smiles, stretching out his arms. “Lan Zhan.” He stretches more and yawns. “Has it been two hours already?” Lan Wangji holds his hand out and Wei Wuxian takes it, being effortlessly pulled onto his feet. “Ah, Lan Zhan, do we really have to go back already?” He pouts. “We didn’t get to spend any alone time together.”
“Wei Ying.”
“Hmm?” He looks up from their joined hands to finally meet Lan Wangji’s gaze. His eyes are dark and hazy. Wei Wuxian lets out a dramatic gasp. “Lan-er-gege, what could you possibly be thinking about at a time like this?” Wei Wuxian knows exactly what he’s thinking because the same thought has been playing through his own mind all morning. “How shameless, really.”

Summary
To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.
What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.
“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”
Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.
