Wilhelm wants to say something—You were so good out there, maybe. Or you were all I thought about in the last five kilometres.
Instead, he says, “Thank you, Simon, you too.” Exactly what he’s supposed to say as the polite, respectful rival he is. “See you,” he adds, his mouth cotton, his throat scorched. He makes it sound as neutral as possible. Like nothing at all.
But Simon’s eyes soften in that way they do when Wilhelm says something with his mouth and something else entirely with his silence. He knows what it means. Find me. Kiss me. Fuck me. When all this settles. When we can breathe again.
They smile, shaky and small. And then they roll away—two separate riders again, swallowed by the noise.

“How are things with your friends and with Simon?”
Before Wille can answer the question, a knock at the door makes him jump. His staff knows he isn’t to be bothered during his session, and he doesn’t think they’ve ever overstepped. Seconds pass without movement and there is another knock, causing Wille to stand as he hears Minou’s voice through the door, “Your Majesty, it’s urgent.”
“I’m so sorry, Boris; I’ll have to end our session for the day.” Boris nods, understands easily, and gives a brief valediction before Wille closes his laptop and walks to the door, frustrated as he rips it open. He is surprised to find not only Minou but her entire team as well.
“I’m so sorry, Your Majesty, but we have a bit of a situation, and I think you’ll want to be made aware of it as quickly as possible.” She reaches for the folded newspaper under her arm and pauses before pulling it out, almost appearing nervous.
(Or, they've all been through quite a bit working up to Wille's coronation, and it's time to cross the finish line.)

"You make me sound like I'm old," he groans, raising his shirt up and over his face, covering what Simon hopes is a bright blush, as if that will make it disappear.
Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Simon's retort gets momentarily stuck in his throat when his eyes drop to Wille's naked skin. Most days, Simon has no problem forgetting about the fact that Wille looks the way he does. That, under his baggy shirts, there are firm lines of muscle, and skin so charmingly pale and freckled that Simon has thought about counting the little marks in weak moments. Most days, Simon's attraction to Wille can be neatly tucked away, sitting somewhere in the back of his mind. Their friendship is too comfortable, too lived in, has always been closer than most people around them understood.
