Summary
It starts with a bad joke.
It’s not even a Leaf that makes the joke, that’s the thing. Jeremy Swayman, freshly out of his crease and off the ice, tosses an offhand comment about carrying Ullmark’s baby if he could. And. Oh.
While Mitch is busy being vaguely scandalized by nearly everything the bubbly goalie says, Auston’s thoughts begin on a downward spiral he can’t reverse.

Summary
Auston really looks at him this time. Takes in Mitch's sunken in eyes, tired look and bowed over posture. Head down half the time, fingernails picked at until they're red, inflamed and bleeding. He can't say anything, his own face reflects it. His own nails bitten down, manicures be damned. He feels it, too, feels the immense weight of loss, of failure. Directionless, hopeless, adrift. Decades of failure rests on their shoulders and he can't help but collapse under the weight of it. He figures Mitch is feeling the same thing.

Summary
The Coyotes aren’t as bad as they were when they first relocated, have even made playoffs off a division spot these last few seasons, but they’re not totally elite either. Not when they’re playing against the Leafs, not when Auston’s got on away white when maybe he should be wearing home blue.
He takes his jersey off during the intermission. He sits in his stall with the jersey held loose in his hands, logo-side up. He sees the black and green. The purple and orange kachina in the center. He sees the same thing he sees every other day of the week.
It feels wrong. All of it feels wrong.(Auston doesn't think he's where he's supposed to be.)

Summary
Maybe everyone was right about Sylvain being a chasm that could never be filled. Things would make a lot more sense if that were the case; Felix gave Sylvain everything, and it hadn't made a difference. If Sylvain is just a monster, then it isn't Felix's fault. There was nothing he could've done, no other promises he could've made. His only sin is his own foolishness.
